Just intersted really.

My DS is in reception (nearly 5) and all his friends and cousins around similar age have a TV in their rooms but both DH and I refuse to let him have one. He goes up to bed at half six, I read him a story and then he can choose a book to look at (read) before i go back in at 7:15pm to take it off him (usually he has fallen asleep with book on face).

We don't let him play out on the front (even though we live on a close) without me sitting on my chair with him when all the other children on the close are allowed.

We don't let him brush his own teeth either although recently we have let him start brushing them and we finish them off.

(No TV in room, Nintendo ds or anything along those lines either. Ds is 4 1/2)

What were those horrible trainers with wheels called? I wouldn't let them have them either.

MrsDinky · 25/04/2010 20:27

DCs are 6 and 4, no Wii, although may relent at Christmas, no DS or any other console.

No TV in rooms
No aspartame, although if they eat it at other people's houses/parties I let it go
Ditto hydrogenated fats
No watching Star Wars or Dr Who yet
No playing outside the front of house without us, or crossing roads without a grown up saying OK
No cycling without a crash helmet
No foods affiliated with cartoon characters, and as little branded merchandise as possible, eg clothes with Disney characters on etc.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/04/2010 20:27

DD had to wait until 13 to have her ears pierced v

posieparker · 25/04/2010 20:30

Steady on 5inthebed I just mentioned that because the OP said where she was!

HellBent · 25/04/2010 20:31

All of you that don't have tvs in kid's rooms do you have a play room? Just wondering, DS (6) has made a lot of friends who have a spare bedroom/dining room used as a playroom that has a tv in it for computer games. We don't have a spare room so DS has one in his room so when his friends/cousins come over they can play in there and I don't have to watch it too.

It is only used for dvd's and Wii and is not connected to aerial for normal telly.

He doesn't have a DS, or lollipops or fizzy juice unless at a party.

lovingmy2 · 25/04/2010 20:33

My Ds has a playroom but has no TV in it.

MerlinsBeard · 25/04/2010 20:33

No fizzy drinks

No Aspartame or Sodium Benzoate (but if they are at friends i let it go)

No playing in the cul de sac (erm...it's still a road)

No chupa chups or similar lollies but they are allowed the 'tree lollies' that are often in party bags. DOuble standard i know but those ones dissolve and/or crumble quite quickly.

No spending hours on the computer every day. They get half an hour each if homework is done, behaviour good and tea eaten!

Also, I don't insist tat they play inside if it's raining. Only if its absolutely peeing it down!

MrsDinky · 25/04/2010 20:35

Nearly all our friends have playrooms with TVs in, we don't have room for a playroom, there is one in our bedroom which doesn't get used much, no DVD or CBeebies up there. We haven't got a Wii yet, when we do it will have to go in the lounge, I must admit I usually retire to the kitchen or computer when the DCs are watching telly. They do love using other people's Wiis though.

KAEKAE · 25/04/2010 20:36

Oh dear...my son is 2.7 and he has a TV in his room! Occasionally he'll watch a DVD on it but he can't watch anything else as it doesn't have an aerial. Anyway, back to the thread. He isn't allowed to...

Have felt tip pens
Have juice, only water or milk
No toy guns

Can't think of anything else....Children will be children and I don't try to keep up with the Joneses.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2010 20:48

guns
felt pens

mil thinks I am nuts but she doesn;t have to do the laundry

Greensleeves · 25/04/2010 20:50

guns
Coke
DS
tv in room
pocket money
Dr Who

Goober · 25/04/2010 20:52

Chewing gum.
Toy guns or swords.

Greensleeves · 25/04/2010 20:53

oh yes, chewing gum

5inthebed · 25/04/2010 20:56

Sorry Posie, it was just the tone of your post, especially with the ! at the end. Didn't mean to get offensive.

I don't allow my DC to have aspartame, especially ds2 as it makes him hyper.

FairyMum · 25/04/2010 20:57

-No tv in bedroom here either.

-They only have homemade bread in their lunchbox. No crisps or biscuits. Apparently I make the most embarrassing lunchboxes in Britain!

-I don't let them watch reality shows like pop idol or soap operas like Eastenders which is apparently cruel of me.

I do things other parents would find shocking and think of myself as a laid-back parent. We all have our little ideas I think.

CatJosephine · 25/04/2010 20:58

no playdo (spelling?); DH has banned it because of the smell.

No TV in room either; I don't know any children who have a TV intheir bedroom.

Lindy · 25/04/2010 21:04

No TV in own room (one family shared TV)
No gameboy, Wii, Xbox, mobile or anything electronic, certainly no mobile. Some time allowed on family computer (no games).

Do allow the occasional half glass of wine though !!

DS is 9 (and yes, I am the meanest mum in the world).

fabhead · 25/04/2010 21:04

No TV in rooms, ever. First opportunity to watch TV in bed will be freshers week at university - as was the case for me. This is our main hard and fast rule funnily enough.

Also:
No fruit shoots and fizzy drinks (MN cliche I know, but there you go).
No Power Rangers on TV and suchlike
No hideous food full of food colouring

Many are falling by the wayside tho with the 5y old eg
No Wii or DS until 6 has become
No Wii or DS on a school night which has become
Only 1 hour on the Wii or DS

MrsJohnDeere · 25/04/2010 21:05

Trampoline
tv in room

nickytwotimes · 25/04/2010 21:07

I'm not keen on tellies in the bedroom either, though I have no problems with tv watching in general. Just don't want ds even MORE stimulated at bedtime.
I got one wneh I wasw about 13, which I feel is reasonable.

DeborahDevonshire · 25/04/2010 21:11

Nose or belly buttons piercings. Or that funny bit in your ear. Or those massive emo holes in ear.

She is 14 and has friends her age with one or all of those. Unbelievably. She knows not to even ask.

Macs. DD has a couple of mates who are getting Macbooks for birthday/xmas. She is not getting one of those at 14 fgs.

mizu · 25/04/2010 21:15

My dds are 4 and 5

No fizzy drinks
No chewing gum
No TV in bedroom
No DS or whatever it is

They accept all this at the moment cos they are still young.
