Girls school uniform

Dear all,

Is it only me, or have you all noticed that Secondary/Grammer school uniforms-especially the girls skirts are getting extremely short! In some cases it barely covers their bottoms. Am I being an old fuddy duddy?

no its same at our local school

I think they should clamp down, somewhat

Although I remember wearing extremely short skirts at high school as well

Trafficcone · 18/04/2010 13:05

Worn with thick tights they look fine. Not so much in summer term with bare legs though!! But let's face it, no one looks good in a knee length skirt, give the poor teens a break!

Yep, an old fuddy duddy
Don't think it's any different than in our day

delica · 18/04/2010 13:11

I know, but these days they are really short! I think the Faith schools can clamp down, and say all skirts/pinafore should just be above the knee. If we are going to lambast a high street store for introducing young children to padded bikinis etc... We need to look at ourselves and tackle what's going home at home.

to be fair, I had two skirts

my TEENY skirt which i wore under my knee legnth one, which was promptly removed at the bus stop and stuffed into my bag

insprognito · 18/04/2010 13:15

It's the same here but I remember rolling my skirt up back in the day too .
Round here it's the pairing with socks pulled up so they end about an inch below the hem of arse skimming skirt that makes them look so bad. They all seem so tall too, they just look so grown up for school kids .

CuppaTeaJanice · 18/04/2010 13:16

I remember my gran saying that when she was at school, the girls were lined up at the start of each term, told to kneel down and a schoolmistress would go along the line with a ruler to make sure nobody's skirt was more than two inches above the knee!!

They'd need a twelve inch ruler these days!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/04/2010 13:17

What Pixie said

Also the skirts aren't that short when they are bought!
They roll them up, they roll them down. DD's uniform is v strict inc knee length skirts and they are when they are at school. Then they like to do their own thing.

Teenagers are like that innit

cory · 18/04/2010 16:31

Dd's skirt was disqualified on her first day in seconday. It was the only skirt in the shops that would fit someone as slim as her- but clearly far too short for the powers that were. Have encouraged her to eat more since

Have heard shocking stories of Victorian ladies actually damping their dresses down to show more body - don't think the local teens have got wise to that one yet.

The DCs school has the opposite problem - they wear long skirts and so all the girls wear them on the hips instead of the waist to make them drag along the floor.

Yes Pixie they look like they are gliding along with no feet. It does look nice though when worn properly - DD2 is in the sixth form now and wears a "suit" ie short dress, sort of matching jacket and very high heels. The Head of sixth Form has threatened a clamp down on uniform after Easter and I don't blame him.

I have the same problem with my eldest, 15. She wears a belt like skirt and those awful overknee socks. Any advice?

Gallievans · 10/05/2010 14:00

well, my dd is still in primary so I have a little leeway but I do remember turning the waistband of my school skirt up or wearing our netball/hockey skirts to get around the length rule and saying we were on the way to play if stopped (didn't work with the games mistress for some reason and the school must have had the largest hockey and netball squads in the county!).

If they have to wear short skirts, well, there's a lot worse they could be doing! so long as they know how to walk / sit in them, and don't bend over (never a good look!) they're only doing what we did and trying to express their individuality.

deaddei · 10/05/2010 17:33

dd in year 7 wore skirt as she should- but now in yr 8 turns it over like everyone.
She has 33 inch inside legs, and the skirts only come in a maximum 21 inches anyway- so even when she doesn't turn the band over, it's still short.
The local RC has a fugly green and brown check pleated knee length monstrosity.

Kasey100 · 11/05/2010 12:17

Yes, but there are pervs and paedos out there. I don't want them being encouraged. Next year I am going to be more strict. Has anybody gone down this route and how did it work?
