Hating raincovers, is it a phase?

DS has suddenly taken a great dislike to his raincover and if it is on, he will screech at the top of his voice and claw at it. So I take it off, which means he gets wet/blown at by the wind which provokes more screaming!

Please tell me this is a phase? He is 18 months. Also any suggestions as to anything I could do? I thought of a waterproof coat but his legs will still get wet. Don't really want to spend out on an expensive waterproof cosytoes unless it's likely he won't grow out of this at all.

Erm in my experience no it's not a phase sorry. Once both mine decided they hated rain covers that was it!

DS2 has an all in one water proof suit that I use for the school run if the weather is looking bad

The waterproof suit only cost me £4 from millets and is very handy for muddy trips to park and out in the garden.

My DD2 always wanted it down when it was windy but up when it was raining! If I put it down while it was raining she would rip it by pulling at the ventilation holes. I no longer use it- she has a hooded rain mac which is quite long, and an ordinary fleecy blanket which can go in the dryer/airing cupboard if it gets sodden.
I do believe you can get wet weather ponchos for small children? Also look out for waterproof trousers. Coat, trousers, wellies- sorted.

Also if it's chucking down I put DD in her snowsuit which is waterproof and toasty.

I'm with Connor on this one

I just put her in with the hood up and an umbrella over her. No way on Gods green earth will she have a raincover on.

Besom · 03/04/2010 16:43

dd has ripped hers by kicking at it so I was wondering if I should buy a new one. I guess not then. Thread has saved me some money!

BertieBotts · 03/04/2010 16:46

Hmm, how annoying. Oh well, I suppose as Besom said it has saved me money because I was getting fed up with how fiddly it was and wanting to buy a universal one.

DD1 never got over her raincover hatred. DD2, however, is more placid, and at 23mths has come through it. She now grudgingly accepts it, especially if I play it right - i.e. make funny faces through it, give her some raisins to eat etc. There is hope!

Mine hates having the raincover in front of his face, but will consent to have it on his knees like an old granny with a blanket. Plus coat then he's usually OK.

Drives me crazy but now I just let him get wet!

Travellerintime · 04/04/2010 14:15

My ds (2.3) hates it; always has. When it's really wet I can get away with draping the cover on top of the buggy, like a sort of canopy. DD didn't mind it so much, but she tore a hole in the side of hers so she had an observation window to peer through.
