Sibling arguing, fighting, etc!

HELP! My son is 3 and daughter nearly 5. Every morning they are arguing, winding each other up, fighting. I get respite during the school day but almost as soon as I pick my daughter up they are at it again. Today it started before we had even got to the bottom of the road the school is on.

I have no idea to how to handle it. I am exhausted and drained from them and have realised that the only time my daughter gets me is when I am moaning and shouting at them.

There are times when they are nice to each other and do play well but these are firmly outnumbered by the time spent fighting. If I try and play a game with both of them then it descends into arguing pretty quickly and I have to admit I am so tired of it that I probably give up a bit too easily.

Any help would be hugely appreciated as I hate being a horrible mum, it makes me feel rubbish and does nothing to change their behaviour.

We have bouts of this in this house too, although mine are a bit younger.
THings I've tried and noticed to be of some help are spending some one on one time with each one individually, encouraging different interests, making little things the same (portions etc), insisting on turn taking for things like what DVD they watch or bedtime stories..
I'm also just about to buy Siblings Without Rivalry.. so here's hoping for some new tricks
