Being a good mummy when they're ill

Ds has a d and v bug and fir the last few days all we've done is cuddle and watch cbeebies.
All of my efforts to be a mummy who does stuff with her dc have stopped.

This is normal isn't it??

What do you spend the day doing with yours when they're ill?

Exactly that but we're beyond cbeebies now(thank gawd) so we have films or some other kinda telly.

If all he is up to doing is watching telly with a cuddle then there's nowt wrong with it.

And you'd probably tire the poor mite terribly if you attempted to do anything where he had to think or interact..

Think of how you fee yourself with a bug like that..

When my DD was ill over this last weekend I did the same as you and nearly went completely insane from being holed up with poor vomiting little one. I was torn between wanting to wrap her up in my best 'mummy make everything alright cuddles' and a strong desire to find any means of escape(which was not at all possible, even for 30mins). I just reckon it is really really extra hard work when they're ill and you sound completely normal if my experience is anything to go by Hope they're better soon.

it is really hard. Especially when they are unusually clingy. Sometimes I've wanted to pee on my own! How unfair of me

Pee on your own? What kind of a mother are you? That's the sort of thing Joan Crawford did. I'm thinking of putting a little row of flip up seats in the loo and tubs of popcorn so we can all get comfy and enjoy the show.

Only once as a treat! Oh to be able to shut the door and take my time...

I have twins and they were both ill for a week before Christmas. I literally had a dead leg and was dehydrated from having been sat on all day with no chance for a drink. I also knew the entire Cbeebies schedule by the end of it. It was very very very dull.

I agree, they did spend a week drinking smoothie in a carton (fiendishly expensive, but better than nothing!) and eating biscuits. So did I

ditto. these human body machines need some off-time when they're ill, and what better way than on the sofa. i think the ensuing boredom is totally natural, and part of the skill set we have to develop :-/ you're giving your little one the comfort they need in their time of need. what could be wrong with that? x

DS (age 3) usually watches a max of 30 mins telly on any given day. However, he was ill all last week, and too poorly for our usual intellectual hothousing genius-making syllabus, so we too watched Cbeebies. I am ashamed to say I have no idea how many hours he watched for, but now he's better he's safely back to fish-oil supplements by drip and watching BBC4 documentaries on obscure Russian authors.

Cbeebies, cuddles, co-sleeping and whatever the hell he wants to eat in this house.

ill = their bed / my bed / sofa whatever with TV if they want.

Being a good Mummy consists of trying to keep the blind panic about work and the discussions with DH as to whose turn it is to take time off to look after ill DC out of their earshot so that they don't end up feeling bad for being ill .

You does what you has to do to get them through it. I will admit to a certain amount of persuasion to watch films, as I greatly prefer to watch Monsters Inc, say, rather than endless CBeebies. Other than that, it's on the sofa with cuddles and reading stories (and not moaning at the choice) (that's me moaning, rather the the poorly DC )

I agree, DVDs win over cbeebies, but I've seen the first hour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang more times than a sane person usually survives.

DS (3yrs) is ill today (fever, cough) and is tucked up on sofa with pillow and light fleece on him (his request). Peppa Pig is on the television, and I imagine kids shows will be on most of the day. There'll probably be some colouring and stories read as well this afternoon, when he tires of the television. With any luck, he'll take a bit of a nap, as he was awake a lot during the night coughing.

Am wondering what you all normally do with your kids that might make you feel guilty for letting them watch some tv when they're ill?

We don't usually have the tv on ALL day. And we try and leave the house from time to time.

Thank goodness ds is well again I was going a bit stir crazy.

pixar box set - at the cost though. That's an expensive bout of flu.

stealthsquiggle - yeah it's not cheap. i did see it a while ago in hmv sale for less. don't think i'll be splashing out that much, although the boredom is very very difficult
