Please reassure me as to what is at the back of ds's throat

Ds 6 has been off today with a sore throat but has been clicking his tongue a lot so I had a look with a torch .

By the side of his tonsil is a huge fleshy growth thing, his twin just has a normal sort of empty cavity with his tonsil in. There is hardly any space round the poorly twin's tonsil at all.

Are those his glands? Sorry I know I must sound dim but I've never really looked down their throats before,no idea what they are supposed to look like.

If it is a gland if he gets worse will he be able to breath? He had 2 extremely nasty bouts of croup involving an ambulance as a baby so I'm a bit touchy re this ds and breathing. Also if it a gland how do i get it to shrink back?

Sounds like a trip to the GP tomorrow morning is in order. If it looks really bad I'd ring NHS Direct tonight too, just to reassure yourself that you don't need the out-of-hours doctor.

It sounds like an infection of sorts. I would phone NHS 24. Is he able to swallow OK?

MilaMae · 11/03/2010 22:23

He can swallow but you can see it hurts and he keeps doing this clicking thing. He's sleeping soundly. I'm guessing it won't just disappear and he'll need anti-biotics????I'll get him seen to tomorrow, not sure I'll be sleeping much tonight!!!!!!

Thanks

I had a growth at one point at the back of my throat/near tonsils, it was a little like a lymph node you get in the neck sometimes (eg size of pea, round, skin over it was stretched so it had a white appearance). I can't remember what it was called, did get a referral to ear/nose/throat just to get it checked out and no action was required. Just went away of its own accord.

If it's actually his tonsils, I had a lot of tonsillitis when I was young and doctors since then have identified this purely by looking at the state of them now... they can get a bit knackered, I think. So the fact that other twin's tonsils look different may be just down to medical history, ie if the one twin has been ill more.

But I'd def suggest visit to GP, as soon as you can. Just don't panic yet!

You keep on saying tonsil - singular. There are two tonsils on either side of the throat. The dangly thing in the middle is called the uvula I think - something like that anyway. What you are describing sounds like a swollen tonsil, so tonsilitis. Definitely go to the gp - I'm no expert but that's what it sounds like to me

Oh Sj you're right, I didn't realise.

Shite I can't get an appointment now, they're booked up by 8.30. He had a good night but it's still there although slightly smaller. I even sent him to school he was so keen. Will it be 10X worse by Monday or can I do anything to get it down?

Many thanks

I wouldn't worry too much if he is well in himself. DD had recurring tonsilitis until she had them out last year. Usually for her it was viral and all the doc said to give her was usually calpol or neurofen. You'll know if it's getting more serious. I hope he bounces back soon
