Pokemon cards - causing trouble!!!

My 7 yo ds is very upset atm - they are allowed to take pokemon cards into school twice a week, and they do swaps, etc. He is not very streetwise, swapped a very 'powerful' one last week, then regretted it. The child he swapped it with last week would only swap it back for 5 other 'very powerful' cards, which he agreed to, but resents that he had to do this.

He's been coming down after he's gone to bed crying about it.

He just seems obsessed by them, and goes on about how his friend gets 70 cards a week, he's asked me for 40 cards a week (I'm not agreeing to that at £1.99 per pack!) I bought 100 second hand, and he discarded many of them because they are the 'old' series.

Can anybody explain to me how these cards work? How often in packs do these 'ultra rare' cards occur?

Does anybody else have pokemon card nightmares?
