Help - My 8 month old just ate some coals (cold) from the gas fire!!!

I have searched on the Internet but cannot find what they are made of. Has this happened to anyone else.

He had taken three big coals out of the (cold) fire and starting nibbing on the corners, so that now they are white at the corners instead of black. Help - what has he eaten.

To be honest, he seems just fine but I don't want to be up half the night checking he hasn't been poisoned.

Does anyone know what these coals are made out of?

Do you mena charcoal coals? If so wouldn't worry . Or fake coals?

SoupDragon · 26/02/2010 21:31

No idea but all 3 of mine have done this [sigh]. No one suffered any ill effects whatsoever.

SoupDragon · 26/02/2010 21:32

(fake coles in my case)

FFS coals. Fake coals. Nothing to do with artificial Cheryls.

Mine did this at the same age! My coals are all in a heap now (have lost the diagram to rebuild the "jigsaw"), and white around the edges.

They didn't suffer with any side effects, although my cream rug did... sadly it has since passed into (coal dust marked) memory.

I thought mine was the only one to do this. anyway no side effects 6 months on. So far.

Still haven't managed to replace the coals though.

Hi all,

Thanks for your experiences. He woke a bit last night but with another tooth about to pop through, I kind of assumed it was that. He never vomited and looks fine this morning, so I guess it is fine. We even managed to clean the (beige) carpet with 1001 so no harm done it seems.

Still must put something around the fireplace - just so hard to find something that fits in with the room, and traditional fireguards are not good as he would push it over and it would come crashing down on him.

Many thanks.

I'm being a bit sneaky and resurrecting this thread to speak to people of the past. My son did this the other day and despite reassurances from medical staff and family members I'm still feeling a bit worried about it. It's good to see I'm not the only one who's child has done this!
@soupdragon I've read mumsnet a lot over the years and recognise your name. I'm assuming your children are still perfectly fine 10+ years on?

Wizzywazzywoo · 29/07/2020 15:56

Another one finding this thread 10 years on, my daughter (11 months) has just done this. Glad to see that none of the babies has suffered any side affects from doing this. 😂

Laravallence · 29/08/2020 15:44

My 9 MO has just done the same! Very reassuring that all these babies have been ok over the years and now seems like it’s a right of passage!

Jonesy86 · 24/02/2022 15:09

Omg i am just reading this as my 10 month old has done this. Don’t think they real coal but his lips are black. 🤦🏼‍♀️

DaddiG · 26/05/2025 15:32

Thank you!! This post has lessened my worry x
