How often wash DC clothes?

My young DC wear the same clothes until they are dirty - (not underwear) - even socks..sometimes it can be a few days - is this normal and ok?

socks, underware: change everyday
school uniform (trousers, shirts/polos): change everyday, school jumper worn 2/3 days as my Dcs usually take it off as soon as they get in the school.

Week end/holiday clothes :changed when needed, usually does not last more than a couple of days ( new top every day for DD1 as she is "teenagering" and I want her to be/feel fresh everyday)

Pyjamas are changed twice a week.

Takver · 20/02/2010 20:42

Underwear clean every day here, otherwise things get washed when they look dirty - (excepting mud on playing clothes, which I figure doesn't really count as dirt).

Theoretically dd (age 7) looks at things and decides what needs to go in the wash & what goes back in the drawer at the end of the day - but I do have to go through the drawers from time to time & pull out all the things which fail even my low standards. PJs change when the bedclothes get changed or sooner if grubby.

I can't imagine how much washing I would be doing if dd had clean clothes every day - as it is we seem to generate ridiculous amounts (probably 5 loads a week?) & there are only 3 of us. Having king sized sheets/duvet on our bed & extra large towels I think is our killer.

lovechoc · 20/02/2010 20:44

clothing I have recently (much to DHs relief!) started to wash every other day for DS (if it's not dirty) so that means trousers and top. Socks get washed daily. It was getting to the point where I was thinking 'this washing pile is never ending!' so decided to take DH's advice and just wash DS's things when really necessary every other day.

PJs get washed every 3rd or 4th night (if not had a smelly nappy or stench of urine from nappy).

Takver we also have two king sized duvets to wash regularly (one for us, one for DS) so these take up a lot of drying time esp when the weather is rubbish outside, means it is difficult to keep the washing pile down. every little helps so if that means only changing clothes when they really are visibly dirty then so be it!

I have noticed a big difference in the washing pile over the past month or so.

I love my king size duvet, but I don't think its very eco . Even worse, I like to have a top sheet as well as a bottom one, and several pillows . . .

I drape them over the bannisters to dry when its wet outside, which makes the house look a bit like a laundrette, but does the trick so long as the cat doesn't feel in a silly mood.

lovechoc · 20/02/2010 21:17

I also like a sheet on the bed (as well as the fitted sheet!) so yes, it's not very eco but we are allowed some small comforts in life!! lol

roll on the summer so we can all get the washing out on the line to dry. hate air drying stuff in the house...

abride · 20/02/2010 22:02

I never wash anyone's clothes unless they are in need of freshening or are stained. Except for underwear. That may mean some things are washed every day and some once a fortnight.

It's a waste of money, fuel and water to do it more often than is needed.

gorionine · 21/02/2010 09:49

In my house it turns out better to change the boys and DD4 once a day. If they changed every time they get dirty, it would be at least twice a day!

mine cant keep it clean long enough to last 2 days in the same clothes so i just chuck everything in the wash as soon as they take it off
if its clean then i don't think anything wrong with re wearing it though

cory · 22/02/2010 00:03

Clean socks and underwear every day, but not the rest. It's the environment thing that bothers me. I don't put on a clean pair of jeans every day either.

displayuntilbestbefore · 22/02/2010 00:08

Clean socks and pants every day and then other clothes either once they are obviously dirty/smelly or else after 2 or 3 wears by which time they are not as fresh as they could be.
Fresh PJs after bathnights.

thumbwitch · 22/02/2010 00:09

I wash stuff when it's dirty. I can't be doing with washing stuff that isn't dirty, waste of energy in so many ways.

Valpollicella · 22/02/2010 00:22

Pants and socks changed daily

Vest every 2 days

If top/trousers not stained (ie though paint at nursery school or through him wiping him mush in his sleeve at dinner time) ...then he can wear them again

funwithfondue · 22/02/2010 07:52

Another in the wash-things-when-dirty club, apart from underwear and DH's work shirts, which are washed after one wear.

Saying that, dd (12 months) often re-wears socks and nighttime babygrows for 2-3 days - they're spotless, so what point washing them? Most of her trousers/dungarees do two days, as do her cardigans. (I have a good collection of wipe-clean bibs).

Bedding and towels, jeans and jumpers get washed every two weeks, roughly.

I'd like to think that's better for the environment, but I must confess to using a tumble dryer.

abride · 22/02/2010 07:55

Around here even more of what's left of the beautiful countryside is being dug up to make a reservoir for a city 70 miles away.

Think about that, all of you who wash everything regardless of whether it needs it. If families in India and China emulate this habit the planet will run out of water even more quickly than we fear. It's simply unsustainable.

weegiemum · 22/02/2010 08:04

I also "wash when dirty" and am also no afraid to spot clean a small gob of yoghurt off a school jumper in the sink and wear again without a full wash.

Undies - daily
Tops and trousers - as and when needed
Pjs - when I think they look dirty
Beds - oh fortnightly weekly at least!

There used to be a poster on here who washed her bedsheets every day (or her cleaner did, anyway). I always thought that was decadent!

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/02/2010 08:57

I wash all the time.

Clothes are washed after each wear - apart from jeans and suit trousers. These are washed after being worn 2-3 times at most.

Everything else is clean on every day and washed after each wearing. Sheets are changed once every 2 days, every day in summer. Do not wear PJs.

Think washing is as reaction to childhood where gran only had a twin tub and so washing was done every fortnight. Therefore sheets stayed on bed for disgustingly long time and things were worn many times before washing. So ended up with paranoia that I smelled which has never left.

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/02/2010 09:00

Weegie think I am the MNewr you are thinking who washed sheets every day!

No I don;t have a cleaner (wishlist).

abride · 22/02/2010 09:05

Couldn't you hang things out on the line to air them instead of washing them? If your family are bathing/showering every day and it's cold I promise you that you don't need to do all this washing.

PenguinNZ · 22/02/2010 09:15

Sheets daily!!??

Towels daily!!??

I only have DH and DS (20ms) to wash for and I still find that mind boggling.

weegiemum · 22/02/2010 09:28

GetOrf, it wasn't you.

It was someone who was very vocal about the fact she had a cleaner who did her laundry for her and she liked this cos she was rich. Suspect she is a mouldy has now left!

If I tried to wash sheets every day or even every 3 days I woudl never move in my house for drying washing (we have no tumbler - on purpose - and live in Scotland so even in summer there are limited good "drying days".

Was never made to smell as a child though - maybe that's the difference!

Rhian82 · 22/02/2010 09:31

DS (15 months) gets new tops every day, but if his trousers are still clean they can last several days. PJs get changed every few days, once they've got breakfast down them or nighttime nappy leaks. He's in cloth nappies so I have quite enough washing as it is without washing clean stuff!
