How often wash DC clothes?

My young DC wear the same clothes until they are dirty - (not underwear) - even socks..sometimes it can be a few days - is this normal and ok?

I wash clothes when they are dirty. Clean underwear and socks daily. Other clothes are inspected and a decision made on whether they cam be worn again. No point in washing if they don't need it.

skinsl · 19/02/2010 19:25

omg, my ds goes through 2 outfits a day and then pjs!! i wouldn't bother washing them if they stayed clean. Tell me, how do you do that???

mowcop · 19/02/2010 19:26

Apart from pants and socks I only wash when clothes are dirty. This applies to everyone, not just my 3 dc's, although some of us do better than others!

2 days at most for clothes
fresh vest, knickers/trunks and socks every day

MarthaFarquhar · 19/02/2010 19:42

All clothes in our house are washed when dirty
So undies, socks, tops, shirts are washed after every wear
Jumpers, cardies, trousers, skirts - checked for marks and sniffed - normally go 2 or 3 days
Jeans - every few weeks maybe ?

I really do not get the washing of clean clothes. Some folk just do not get the whole point of underwear.

Dominique07 · 19/02/2010 19:44

"accidental" shagging!!?
Whats that!? "Oops, oh sorry, I didn't mean to start that, oh actually, its alright, lets carry on!" hahaha
(maybe spontaneous shagging?)

anyway...

Maybe if your DC wear slippers, and don't sweat too much then the socks are ok.

I have to wash all of DS's clothes daily, even if I just use the brush to scrub off surface muck like yoghurt or mud,
and shoes at this time of year need a good scrub too!

muggglewump · 19/02/2010 19:47

I do fresh underwear daily, outer clothes washed when dirty, or weekly, whichever comes first.

Anymore than that is a waste of time/water/washing powder, and makes no sense.

pigsinmud · 19/02/2010 19:51

Why would you have clean pjs every day??
Same as mugglewump - clean socks & pants every day, but don't wash outer until dirty. Ds1 has clean top/school shirt every day as he is entering the sweaty phase!

I really don't get the pjs - I mean you only sleep in them.

harecare · 19/02/2010 19:58

Why fill a washing machine with clean clothes? Total waste of energy and water.
Clothes are worn til dirty or smelly in our house - underwear changed daily though.

CloudDragon · 19/02/2010 20:00

after reading some research on asthma and ezcema rates and children I stopped bathing and changing clothes everyday,

as there was a link between too many baths and clean clothes and increase in asthma/ezcema rates (thought the reasons are not clear thinnk it is to do with dry skin/suppressed immune system and over exposure to the chemicals in washing powder)

made my wash load a lot less.

Also environmentally far better too.

Why would you change pjs every day?!
Here underwear, socks, t-shirts get washed after each wear, but pants and sweaters, if clean- not for a few days.
It's madness to wash jeans every day.

skinsl · 19/02/2010 21:06

my DS has his breakfast in his pjs.... say no more!
maybe he is just extra messy?!!

mathanxiety · 20/02/2010 00:23

People sweat quite a lot at night. Otherwise I wouldn't need to change the sheets or pillow slips.

SecretSlattern · 20/02/2010 00:32

I'm just learning the art of re-wearing clothes for me and the kids. DH seems to be an expert at it . I simply cannot keep up with the washing, and with DC3 on the way, I dread to think how much I will have to do.

DD is the worst one though. She tends to slop yoghurt down herself at school, so have enough uniform to last her a week (another thing less to stress about when the baby arrives!).

Everyone's underwear and socks go in the wash after one wearing here; pjs, sheets and towels changed once a week. Other clothes get changed as needed although since I have a wash day once a week, I make sure that everything that has been worn that week goes in and we start the new week with fresh everything, iyswim.

katiepotatie · 20/02/2010 13:15

pj's get chanaged daily as my dc's eat breakfast in theirs

pigsinmud · 20/02/2010 19:23

I won't even tell you how long the sheets remain on the bed ....longer than a week that's for sure.

scaryhairycat · 20/02/2010 19:37

I don't get the washing clothes every day thing either - in our house, if it looks dirty or it smells it goes in the wash, and clean undies every day, obviously. Simples. Why make a load more washing than necessary? It's not good for the clothes either, especially cheaper ones (all we can afford! ).

scaryhairycat · 20/02/2010 19:40

Mind you, I hardly ever iron either. God, I'm such a lazy cow eco-warrior!

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/02/2010 19:45

My dc (9 and 6) have clean pants and socks every day.

Vests usually go 2 - 4 days.

Tops - 2 days.

Jeans/skirts - until dirty (1-5 days)

Jumpers, sweatshirts - ditto

PJs - 4 - 5 days unless something gets spilled on them or skidmarked.

Am astonished at clean pjs for everyone every day. And judgey.

itshappenedagain · 20/02/2010 20:30

everything clean on every day in this house...bedding changed twice a week. towels everyday. Ds (3) can sometimes go through more than 1 lot of clothing due to being able to find dirt anywhere, but unless we are venturing out i dont tend to worry. but then again i also iron everything, im very bad for the enviroment!

Collision · 20/02/2010 20:35

Only underwear is changed every day otherwise I would never stop washing!

I currently have an empty wash basket

I can make uniform last 3 days if the boys havent had yoghurt for lunch!

Jeans can last for days - why wash clean clothes?

Beds are changed every fortnight or so and towels are washed when I remember to wash them.

We certainly do not smell and bathe regularly.

Bleatblurt · 20/02/2010 20:39

No way every day! Unless they are manky, obviously. I wash their stuff when it's dirty and not before! I also don't bathe them everyday as I don't think it's good for their skin. They are not smelly in the least.
