Starting solids/how much to feed

Hi all,

My ds is 5 mths and we are thinking about when he starts solids next month, just wanted some advice from parents who have gone/are going through this.

There is a lot of conflicting info on what to feed them on and how often to feed them. I have spoken to to hv's one said only give him a few spoons a day for a month or so and nothing sweet or he will develop sweet tooth whilst the other said to give him breakfast, lunch and dinner (aswell as milk)

Really just want to know how much roughly to give him and how often?

thanks

xx

Go with the first HV, first foods are only designed to let them experience a new texture in their mouth, not to fill them up IYSWIM. I know naff all about baby led weaning, which is something different I think

I did BLW ( baby led weaning) with DD so not much help im afraid but wanted to say try posting in the weaning forum as there are lots of people starting out there too

Oh I did the same thing - just put some food out infront of him and let him at it!!! Honestly - just normal food BUT no honey until he's 1, no choky things like cherry tomatoes or grapes and his daily salt intake should be under 1g.

Just offer what you are having yourself - ie chunk of you sandwich (with crusts on if you have them on for yourself) etc. Sit him on your lap or on a highchair next to you - and chat about the world!

type 'blw' into youtube for a quick introduction

I would start savoury things first tbh, good things would be toast to suck (with various spreads) soft veggies, scrambled egg, stuff that you have. Depends if you are doing the blw/puree route tbh.

Started weaning 2 weeks ago on organic baby rice, with fruit in it, as other stuff wouldn't give to worst enemy. Just give small amount to start 1-2 spoonfuls they will let you know if they want more but V imp to continue with full milk feeds (BF or bottle)as they still need all the nutrients. I started at B/fast and then went on to tea time feed and still on just these 2 feeds although ds is now looking for more at lunch feed but reluctant to give more. I had to start early as had had to increase feeds as couldn't keep up with his demand and the next step was weaning.
