DS1 has got chicken pox
He started with just a few spots on Wednasday am and by Thursday am he had quite a few more so went to see GP who confirmed it was chicken pox.
Last night was a nightmare... DS1 awake most of the night scratching and itching. Got calomine lotion but is there anything more effective at reducing the itching and how long will it be before the itching stops.

Piriton is great for itchiness and helps sleep as long as he is over 1. Also tepid baths with oatmeal in a sock over running tap or bicarb of soda added to bathwater. One they have scabbed over they are less itchy.

We had three difficult days with DS (he was 14 months) I used calpol and nurofen, calamine cream, porridge oats in his bath (in a sock) and kept him in loose clothes. He had to stay off nursery for a week and stay away from all his groups until all his spots had scabbed over. He had some scars and marks for a long time but now they are almost all gone (he's now almost 17 months) HTH

warm baths run through a sock filled with porridge oats .. DS had at least 3 day on first couple of days

i found calamine cream better than lotion - as the lotion just seems to dry the spots out making them more itchy. The cream is more moisturising. Get it from a chemist. Also Olibatum (I think) for the bath helps. Also bicarb of soda in the bath helps.

My daughter has just recovered from this, her scabs have scabbed over. But when she started getting them, i just used calamine lotion, she didn't seem as itchy as i thought she wouyld be.

Dr prescribed sudocream (yes the nappy one) for DS2 last week and it seemed to help control the itch

i used a homepathic tablet for my dd this worked from the inside.It was called rhus tox.

We found piriton worked really well.

Piriton and bicarbonate of soda in tepid baths.
I was told by the nurse at the doctors not to use calomine as they now think it can block the spots and be more likely to get infections and leave scars. Oh and calpol if he has a temperature

Calomine lotion and tie up a big handful of oats in a muslin and hold it under the running bath tap and cut fingernails

There's an excellent anti itch cream I used on my DDs 1 and 2 - and am now using on my DH who has chicken pox now (tee hee ) called "Eurax". I also bathed them in Bi carb of soda and put "calamine with aqueous cream" on their faces - only place you can't put Eurax.

hey there spangles - all three of my kids got chicken pox at the same time and I was pregnant with my fourth at also - but was immuned thank goodness!! I went to the doctors and they could only suggest calomine lotion and only had this to work with and seemed to work quite well to a point but we just kept piling it on and it was a nightmare...broken nights.....etc.... but if we kept on top it seemed to work. Hope you find a solution and hope your ds1 gets better soon

for all tha advice. My MIL went to chemist for me 10 mins before closing time and they recomended EURAX cream. I used this and DS slept for 12 hours. If that hadn't worked I was going to get PIRITON, but thankfully I think we are over the worse.
Now just waiting for DS2 to get it

Hello all, any more advice grateulflyl received, my dd has had the pox for 8 days, only 10 spots in total (I almost feel cheated!) but REALLY bad temperature. Now she has got a streaming nose and hoarse voice from crying.. argh.. any tips? any guesses as to when she will feel back on her feet?

she may develop a chest infection from cp, that can oftern follow. keep her well hydrated, topped up with calpol and try and keep her cool, and endure the further misery that is chuffing CP
