my ds (5) is in bed by 6pm each night. is this a bit too early and mean? in the summer when it starts staying lighter for longer he will prob go to bed a little bit later but for the mean time its 6.

he is then awake by 6am. even when he goes to bed later he still wakes up at 6am so at the moment its 6pm-6am

what do you think?

dd (now 6) has lights off at 7.40pm but can still be heard until around 8pm as she caterwauls as her wind down. She has had a 7.30/7.40pm bedtime since she was 5ish. DS (3) has bedtime around 7.30pm.

lovecheese · 21/01/2010 20:05

My dd (just 6) is in bed for around 7.30pm, definetaly no later than 8pm as she turns into a gorgon; My DH often does not get home before 6.30 so he would miss out on seeing them all.

DD is 4 and goes to bed at 7pm, sleeping by quarter past. She wakes up about half-six during the week when I'm working, maybe about 7 at the latest.

Six seems awfully early, unless you think he's tired by the point.

lovecheese · 21/01/2010 20:06

sorry, what is caterwauling?

Muppet123 · 21/01/2010 20:08

I try to have mine in bed by 7:15pm. Sometimes it's 7:30/45 if they are messing about or doing poos!! Depends on the child really. If you wanted to ease him into a later bedtime you could try giving him an extra 15 or 30 mins every few days to see how that suits him, will take a little while to translate into a later morning though if at all.

If 6 to 6 works for you then what's the problem? if it ain't broke and all that..! [Dreams of all Dcs being in bed by 6pm emoticon]

ja9 · 21/01/2010 20:09

7pm. ish.

His bedtime has been 7pm since he was 3 months old

Seona1973 · 21/01/2010 20:12

caterwauling is very loud, very off key singing

biglips · 21/01/2010 20:13

dd1 (5) is between 6 - 6.30

NorbertDentressangle · 21/01/2010 20:14

DS is in bed by 7pm for his story and asleep by 7.30pm (unless I'm feeling frazzled he's really tired and then he's in bed sooner)

Sometimes at the weekend he'll stay up later depending on what we're doing.

NoahAndTheWhale · 21/01/2010 20:15

DS is 6 and DD is 4.

Both go to bed at the same time - we start going up about 7 and they are asleep by about 8. Generally wake up about 7:30 if it is a weekday (and obviously earlier if it is a weekend ).

GlastonburyGoddess · 21/01/2010 20:16

7pm

Ooh, lovely, I was going to start this thread!

1845 is Official Bedtime, though since she has started school she has been absolutely shattered, so have moved it to 1815 for time being.

Like another poster said, if it ain't broke.

Wheelybug · 21/01/2010 20:42

DD is 5 on sunday (yikes).

Tonight she was in bed, lights out by 7.15 but that was early. I usually hope to have her lights out on a school night by 7.30 (very much depends when I get dd2 down cos I do her first). Weekends later. She'll wake anytime from 7.

As others have said though, if 6-6 works for you (or more importantly if he won't sleep later if he goes to bed later) then keep it as it is.

ln1981 · 22/01/2010 13:33

ds1 (5.11) is in bed for 8pm, as is dd (4.3) ds2 (2.6) is in bed for 7pm. he gets up at stupid oclock however (sometime between 2 and 3am, and no he rarely goes back to sleep at the mo!)

Chooster · 22/01/2010 13:33

If it works stick with it - its not mean to give him a good nights sleep! Do you want a later get up in the morning?

My 5yr old DS goes to bed at 8pm and I'm lucky if he's asleep by 9pm. No matter what time I put him to bed he just wont sleep and often the earlier I put him to bed the later he's awake for. Thats just him really.... He'll sleep til about 7.30. I think just like adults, kids need different amounts of sleep and some are more morning people and others night owls...

Once he does more after school activities it will probably have to be later - things like cubs etc dont start til 6pm where we are...

mistlethrush · 22/01/2010 14:03

My soon to be 5yo ds goes to bed between 6 and 6.30 normally and normally gets up at 6.30ish. When he does occasionally go to bed a bit later for some reason (normally MiL related) he still gets up at 6.30ish but is then grumpy all day.
