I just read this article from an American magazine, and thought I'd share it with the board. It's appalling parenting IMO, and I'm astounded that they think it's something to boast about!

I'm crap at links, so if it doesn't work, please do a cut/paste! In fact, if the link doesn't work, maybe someone more technically astute can insert a link for me!

I found this article very depressing but I suppose a lot of rich peoples's children are brought up this way.

expatkat · 06/07/2005 11:36

Maybe an Upper East Side mom, FIMAC, but there's lots of diverty in parenting styles even on the Upper East Side.

I don't know how this discussion deteriorated into New York bashing [sigh]. . .Isabel is NOT that typical. She was chosen because she's OTT. That's what the press do to get readers. . .They could profile my more normal NYC friends who work 2 days a week and are full on moms 3 days a week and don't spoil their kids or hire a "village" (and she has a nanny FGS--hardly a village). . .but that wouldn't sell mags.

Anyway, how Isabel raises her son doesn't really affect any of us, does it. You can feel sorry for Ryman, but he's probably not going to grow up feeling particularly sorry for himself.

Janh · 06/07/2005 11:41

This is the reason for the village part, I'm guessing. google} comes up with pages of "it takes a village" quotes.

She named her son after a stationery shop??

Janh · 06/07/2005 11:47

Just read p6 -

What a warm and wonderful human being he's going to be.

expatkat · 06/07/2005 11:53

My mom said, "This child is headed straight for jail."

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 12:06

OMG! I'm coming into this late, sorry but...OMG!!

I haven't read it all but the writer's certainly dropped a few ambiguous (or not) swipes in. Espesh the "If she seems frightening, perhaps it?s because she?s so unlike our own mothers and operates so counter to both instinct and emerging wisdom." Is that some kind of code for thick as pig shi*t??

It's always been my experience that the people who harp on about how happy and sorted they are the ones who retire to a padded cell a? nights. And everyone I've ever met (of either sex I'd add) who has come out with the 'I'm so strong and independent' corker always ended knocking on my door in the wee small hours crumbling into disarray for one reason or another. It all wouldn't be so bad but you can see it coming a mile off! Poor deluded idiots (in the Chris Morris sense).

renaldo · 06/07/2005 12:46

Isabel wants Ryland to be happy, and he can?t be happy unless he?s in control. Thus, when he wants a cookie, she gives it to him.

and this woman wants to gve parenting advice!!!
FFS!

expatinscotland · 06/07/2005 12:51

£1m would make me happy. Too bad I wasn't born to a sad sucker like Izzy.

bran · 06/07/2005 12:51

She's obviously transferring her own feelings about only being happy when in control. What an unfortunate way to be given how much of our lives are beyond our control. Personally I'm happiest with the unexpected, I try not to plan too much and see what happens. I probably wouldn't fit in too well with alpha moms.

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:21

Whats the opposite of an 'Alpha' mum??

Janh · 06/07/2005 19:21

Omega? Zeta?

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:25

'Zeta' mum...We'll be sued!

Janh · 06/07/2005 19:27

Shall we start up a rival org? Sister club to the slovenly slatterns?

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:29

How about 'bum'mums?

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:30

Or is that a bit too much like bum chums??

MistressMary · 06/07/2005 19:30

Alpha mums?
Sounds like a dog thing?

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:32

I'm not sure I like where this is going...

Janh · 06/07/2005 19:32

mmm - I like it - but sadly bum isn't as harmless here as there!

(You know "Hallelujah I'm a bum"? Introduced my sons to it recently, they fell off their chairs!)

Janh · 06/07/2005 19:33

(They particularly liked the chorus)

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 19:34

Peachy!

franke · 06/07/2005 19:48

I found the words "self" and "actualise" mysteriously popped into my head as I was reading that article

ssd · 06/07/2005 20:32

I started to read this article, I was at the end of the first page when I thought when does the nanny, the maternity nurse, the babysitter and the cleaner appear and then on page 3 they did!! Surprise surprise!! Have "alpha" is it when you've got a legion of paid help at home to take the kiddies and clear up the mess when you've had enough??

ssd · 06/07/2005 20:33

How "alpha" even....

monkeytrousers · 06/07/2005 20:40

Good point!
