How to get a 3yr olds eating habits back on track

Ds3 is 3 yrs old. His diet is dreadful and I need to improve it. He is tired alot of the time and quite bad tempered. Now I know being tired and grumpy is quite normal for a 3 yr old but I think his poor diet really is not helping his mood or energy levels.

We are quite chilled out when it comes to food and meals probably too much so. I have fallen into the trap of letting him eat what he wants rather than nothing at all. It's been a bit of a slippery slope and I hadn't quite realised how bad things had got.

So that's it. We are going to ignore the tantrums for cakes and biscuits and offer him proper healthy meals and snacks.
Anyone been through this and offer and tips or advice? How long did it take to start eating well?
