Boys and girls wearing kilts

Hi
My dilemma is to do with the very cold weather we are having. When our children were very young, we made the decision to ensure that they grew up disciplined and smart. One of our rules is that both our boy and girl look smart for church on Sundays, and to that end, to reflect our Scottish heritage, they both wear kilts for this and other formal occasions.
Because of the cold weather, our daughter has been wearing thick cotton tights and boots with her kilt, whereas our son has to make do with knee length socks.
He continues to moan he is cold, and thinks that the fact his sister is allowed to wear tights is unfair, and wants to wear trousers. We have been resistant as once he starts wearing trousers, it'll be hard to change back.
Do you think we are being unfair, as its only for a couple of hours and although the kilt is a childs kilt, and not as warm as a mans, it shouldn't be that chilly?
We'd be interested to hear what others think.

scottishmummy - my Scottish gps love house of bruar. we get dragged there (if I have this right) on every trip to Inverness.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:15

oh, these Highland ladies pretty much blew my romantic notions of twee Scotland out the water straightaway, not that i had many left!

and the DDs are no exception to that.

Poor little guy!

Totally off topic-I've never been to Scotland. I want to. I promise I won't buy tartan trousers and wear them around to proclaim my Yank status!

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 20:18

I'm not an Island girl I only lived there for 10 years.

Proper weegie these days!

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:27

So now you see, the perv of the Highlander and the cheek of the weegie rubbed off on her in combination.

DH had his cleaned in Gourock, MrsM. After someone got a bit carried away dancing and tipped an entire pint of Tennant's lager down DH's front.

MrsMuddle · 02/01/2010 20:44

Was it just a regular dry cleaners or was it a specialist?

brimfull · 02/01/2010 20:44

I always though the kilt was for men and boys not girls.

I know nowt though, haven't lived in Scotland since I was 7.

I do think the OP sounds like she wants her children to make the right impression on the congregation regardless of whether his gonads are dropping off. Bit pathetic imo.Lighten up and find something worthwhile to worry about.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 21:14

trykilt hire shop since they must get them cleaned

AgentProvocateur · 02/01/2010 21:58

Good idea, Scottishmummy. I'll ask on Tue when I'm bakc at work.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 22:17

and pop into bradfords for cupcakes

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 22:19

No, it's just a normal dry cleaners, MrsM.

But being in the West Coast of Scotland, they had a lot of experience with kilts.

Did a fine job.

I was a bit embarrassed about how it got dirty, but they said they'd seen it all pretty much.

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 22:23

The OP won't be back.

She doesn't want to admit she's a wee free.

(admitting now I am a happy clappy bappy - thats why my kids wear jeans to church!! )

piscesmoon · 02/01/2010 22:57

If OP wants her DS to choose to wear a kilt when older she needs to be flexible. If he has terrible memories of freezing, and wearing it against his will, he will stop as soon as able.

LauraIngallsWilder · 02/01/2010 23:09

This thread is bizarre and the op is clearly on a pervy windup

Q for those of you who live in scotland - do kids wear kilts to church on a weekly basis?
Does anyone wear them except for weddings, busking and well I dunno other stuff

Im late joining the thread but find it difficult to believe any children/adults wear kilts to church more than a couple of times a year - am I right or wrong?

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 23:13

My girls don't have kilts. MIL is of the opinion they're for girls who are in pipe bands only.

They have tartan dresses and party dresses for weddings, school functions, parties and weddings or funerals.

DS is still a baby so he's not got a kilt just yet.

DH has one, he got it for his 21st and it's a wedding, ceilidh, funeral, parade garment.

MIL's father used to wear one about, but it was long ago and he was from Dunkeld.

Sometimes you see old men round here wearing them about, but on weans it's just for special events or if they are in pipe bands.

NewnameSameoldme · 02/01/2010 23:28

OP - I think you need to ask yourself 'What would Rob Roy do?'

GentleOtter · 02/01/2010 23:33

Laura - Children from some of the private schools round here all wear the kilt as uniform so yes, it is worn to church (and in winter).
Girls wear long tartan skirts rather than kilts.

Heated · 02/01/2010 23:33

Put the lad in a tartan scarf and tartan ear muffs, brrr.

LauraIngallsWilder · 02/01/2010 23:41

Thanks expat and otter - Im being dense now! Do the boys wear them to school? I bet that causes a few 'larks' and 'japes' (I got a retro stylee Bunty annual for xmas its affecting my vocab!)

Now theres a thing, I didnt know you lived in scotland otter - for some reason I imagined you lived in rural south west of england! (no idea why I thought that!)
If I get round to it I might CAT you about something else entirely (hope you dont mind!).......

GentleOtter · 03/01/2010 08:00

We are in snowbound rural Perthshire, Laura and of course I don't mind you sending a CAT.

Yes, the boys wear the kilt to school and each of the schools have a set tartan - not just for the pipe band. The girls wear very long tartan skirts. I've noticed that none of the teachers wear the kilt though...

Ally68 · 03/01/2010 09:19

We'll, I must admit, I've been acused of many things, but never a pevert!
Like where GentleOtter lives, the boys also wear kilts around here (although only for special occasions, church, etc). We've spoken to him this morning, and he admitted that his moan is more about the fact he feels we are stricter with him as sister gets to choose to wear tights and boots to church.
We've spoken to his sister and explained the situation and she is going to wear long socks with her kilted skirt today, as she does for school, and we shall see how they get on. She's not that bothered as she's used to it - as I said- she wears a skirt with socks to school every day anyway (its the school uniform- not our choice).

Good morning ally! - the general impression here on this thread is that you are winding us up - and as this is your first post on MN I am inclined to agree

If however you are genuine.......... what do the other kids at church wear?
As far as I know no child wears school uniform to school in England unless they go to boarding school or a choir school.

I go with my children to church every sunday and my kids usually wear jeans and jumpers just as they would any other day! If I made my son wear smart clothes he would look smarter than 95% of the adults at our church

purepurple · 03/01/2010 09:28

I have deja-vu a bit with this thread.
Something about children and tights in the summer. All seems a bit samey.

GentleOtter · 03/01/2010 09:30

Let the boy wear long cycling shorts over his pants and of course long hose. I am hoping he is not in a shirt and jacket as that would not be warm enough today plus does he have a warm overcoat eg duffle? It may be old fashioned but vest, t shirt and layers of woollens will keep the upper body warm.

Sometimes the church/ kirk/ hall can take a while to warm up. It is extremely cold and icy out today.
