Boys and girls wearing kilts

Hi
My dilemma is to do with the very cold weather we are having. When our children were very young, we made the decision to ensure that they grew up disciplined and smart. One of our rules is that both our boy and girl look smart for church on Sundays, and to that end, to reflect our Scottish heritage, they both wear kilts for this and other formal occasions.
Because of the cold weather, our daughter has been wearing thick cotton tights and boots with her kilt, whereas our son has to make do with knee length socks.
He continues to moan he is cold, and thinks that the fact his sister is allowed to wear tights is unfair, and wants to wear trousers. We have been resistant as once he starts wearing trousers, it'll be hard to change back.
Do you think we are being unfair, as its only for a couple of hours and although the kilt is a childs kilt, and not as warm as a mans, it shouldn't be that chilly?
We'd be interested to hear what others think.

church is supposedly spiritual not aesthetic experience.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 18:52

did someone say kilt pervy?that is daft to say. kilt is a great garment, looks stunning.just don't believe in suffering to wear it

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 18:54

I have no bother with young men with gorgeous arses suffering to wear the kilt if I am walking behind them

Not little boys (though my 7yo ds looks lush in a kilt).

LOL i see you in a new lascivious light.leering at strapping big kilt wearers

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 18:57

Also interested Ally - how does your ds deal with Sunday School - you know running about playing games etc - if he is wearing a kilt. My kids all wear trousers because they have an active hour in the church hall and they wouldn't enjoy it much if they had to be really careful about being clean/tidy.

How cold is your church? Ours is nice and snug!

Whatever your views (I have nothing against kilts, having grown up in an area where boys wore them for 'best')you have to be flexible and take account of weather conditions. Not wearing a kilt 6 times out of 52 doesn't really matter! Get some long trousers in the family tartan.

weegiemum, you minx!

mmm, fit chaps in kilts, though . . .

scottishmummy, DD1 is jocko as it gets and she has some tartan jimjams that she loves.

and her granny got them for her in House of Bruar (ponce emoticon).

so it's not just tourists and Yanks who wear them!

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 19:52

House of Bruar expat? You snob!

Can't you just see my dh in a kilt?

(he wore one once and said it was "too drafty", sadly)

southeastastra · 02/01/2010 19:53

i think it's dead cute to wear a kilt

geordieminx · 02/01/2010 19:54

WEEGIEMUM ...with you though

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 19:55

LOL i dont mind tartan jammies, its the legions of peg legged tourists dawdling around princes st in newly purchased tartan trews and accessories, that get me

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 19:55

aye, house of bruar! she got them wee tartan dresses there, too, in her (MILs) tartan.

well, it is a purty one.

i love house of bruar food hall and all the wee samples they put out .

i lurve my DH in his kilt. it's so sexy and erm . . . convenient .

that's why my cheeks burn with shame if he's wearing one in a church.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 19:57

ach, there's nothing like perving watching a Scottish wedding procession in summer . . .

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 19:57

kilts are so attractive (not on prince chuck though)

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:00

FIL wears boxers under his if he is going to have go be anywhere near town centre (Embra) as he's had far too many tourists, most of them Japanase for some reason) lifting it up from behind right there in the road!

purpleduck · 02/01/2010 20:01

op needs to wear a knee length skirt (draughty), and knee socks....then tell us if this is still an issue.

Honestly!!!

MumNWLondon · 02/01/2010 20:01

Perhaps some thermal bermunda short length long johns (maybe even 2 pairs, ideally in same colour as kilt) and then long warm socks so only knees showing?

Or maybe you could compromise and let him wear tracky trousers underneath? Agree tartan trousers bad idea. You don't want to put him off.

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 20:01

I shock to please ......

weegiemum · 02/01/2010 20:02

But the OP will never come back now ......

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:03

i agree, her poor weans are probably blue with cold wearing such in this weather as they are just lads.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 20:06

tourists having a cheeky peep under your mans kilt?that is cheeky.he should at least charge and tell em its pound a swatch but dont touch the goods

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:08

oh, he's had it happen more than once.

he works as a church warden/groundskeeper and makes extra money hiring out to set up and take down after weddings or funerals, so wears his kilt for work often enough.

but when he's got an engagement 'up the toon' as he calls it, he wears boxers.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2010 20:08

we always knew weegiemum had it in her .

scottishmummy · 02/01/2010 20:10
