At what age did your DD start her periods?

I'm trying to work out if i just have a slightly stroppy 11 year old or is this something more?
I was 13 but i've heard that girls seem to be getting younger or is there some correlation between what age mum/female relatives started?

There is meant to be a correlation between mother/daughters' starting ages but I don't know if that's actually proven. I was 11, DD was 11. But a prepubescent nightmare for a good year before she actually started.

bruces · 30/12/2009 23:49

My DD started at 11 and has had a period every month it's now coming up to 2yrs now,i think I was about 13 when mine started.

I'm 22 now and was 10 when I started mine. This was definately early as I remember it causing a bit of commotion in class when the sanitary towels fell out of my bag.

saladfingers · 31/12/2009 16:31

so i could be in for a year of this?? was thinking it could be close as her boobs are growing and her sweat glands are definately wotking. no sign of any pubes or inhibitions so far but again i cant remember what order it all happens.
thanks for your replies

I was nearly 14, but my daughter is taller than i was, lost her first baby tooth at five! i just KNOW she will start her periods earlier than i did.

sorry i can't contribute to your thread but i'm interested in it!

Kaloki · 31/12/2009 16:37

I was 11 when I started, as was my mum, so it's possible

arionater · 31/12/2009 17:35

I was 11 too, and that was a year or two earlier than most of my friends (early 90s) and all of my sisters. I remember my mother telling me that my periods would start once I hit 7 stone - no idea if there is any scientific basis to this but I had just hit that weight when I had the first one (and I think it's also true that taller/heavier girls generally start earlier). There is also some variation depending on genetic backgrounds - girls with African heritage tend to be earlier than Caucasian, those with Chinese/Japanese backgrounds a bit later I think.

HugeBaublesWhatDidISayRoy · 31/12/2009 17:37

dd was almost 11 and it was totally unexpected. year 5. poor thing. i was 13.

Georgimama · 31/12/2009 17:39

I don't have a daughter but I was one month off my 12th birthday - 12 to 13 seemed pretty average amongst my friends. That was getting on for 20 years ago (gulp).

LymeBayToEbay · 31/12/2009 17:41

I was 13. My Mum was 18

I was very small for my age, not very developed and deffo earlier than some taller more well developed friends.

I distinctly remember being very frightened. I understood what it was, had known for years it would come but woke up one day with the sheets soaked in blood and sobbed. Mum let me have the day off school

bruffin · 01/01/2010 10:26

11.5
I think I started on my 12th birthday

brummiemummie · 01/01/2010 16:18

DD1 was 10
DD2 was 9
DD3 was 11
DD4 was 9

I am fairly sure it is getting a bit younger with each generation - the average now is around 11 but when I was growing up it was 13-14. I was 13ish fwiw, so it's not out of the question that your DD could be near to starting,

Periods are supposedly one of the last stages, after hair, boobs etc iirc, although that's not how it worked with at least 2 of my DDs.

I was 15, and all my friends had their periods much earlier. Also my DD' best friend had hers at 12.

saladfingers · 01/01/2010 20:35

ahh brummiemummie 9 is sooo young to have to cope with all of that! My DD is definately fleshing out and becoming quite shapely. Btw she cant wait to start! she knows all about it and has been prepared for months but i think part of it must be that one or two of her friends have gone through it and she wants to join the 'club'!

Did inhibitions kick in simultaneously? She still prances round naked in front of the whole family and as much as i love her innocence and lack of inhibitions i'm sure she'll start to cover up soon and start locking the bathroom door. I remember hating my body and the way it seemed to be out of control!

My dd was 11 almost 12
I was 14
My Mum was 11-12

I think I was the freak because I was probably underweight - I ate like a sparrow and was very skinny. So I don't think it's to do with weight but I think you have to reach the weight that you could nourish a baby which is influenced by height IYSWIM.

tiredandgrumpy · 01/01/2010 20:47

I'd heard that reaching 7 stone was something of a guideline. Makes sense for when I was that age, if I remember correctly. Poor kids starting as young as 9 - was traumatic enough for me at 15!

Georgimama · 01/01/2010 20:53

I was more than 7 stone when I started my periods, I'm sure of it. More like 9.

MaggieMnaSneachta · 02/01/2010 18:31

i was 8 stone i's say

missingtheaction · 02/01/2010 18:37

45kg + they start looking developed, I have heard. Obviously not infallible but certainly true for my DD who started at 10

bruffin · 03/01/2010 13:32

DD wasn't she was only 6-6.5 stone and 5'1 but very curvy. I have heard it's a percentage of body fat rather than weight

Missus84 · 03/01/2010 13:38

I've heard the weight thing too. I started about 12 and 7.5 stone. My younger sister was much, much skinnier than me, no fat on her, and didn't start til she was 16 and finally started filling out.

lexcat · 04/01/2010 08:40

I was 13 but dd 8 seems to be showing sighs of puberty starting so they say 1.5-2 years later so she could be as young as nearly 10. To me that just sounds scary as I wouldn't have wanted to been any younger then I was.

Carrotfly · 04/01/2010 08:45

DD is 13 and skinny as a rake. No sign of anything yet.

I was around 14 too.
