How can I teach my child not to be so b*** competitive?

DS is 8, he's also got a very competitive streak. It helps that his teacher used to be just like him when she was young, she encourages him to get right answers rather than finishing first, or gives him credit for good punctuation rather than the longest story. It's about setting slightly different goals I think, channelling their competitiveness so they can use it to their advantage.

Oh, and he does competitive sport at the weekend - but a team sport, so he's learning to act collaboratively, as well as that sometimes you lose and you actually don't die!
