toddler with a hacking cough - any point going to doctor?

My DS (2) has a hacking cough which has been going on for more than a week. It got a bit better but has now worsened.
Twice today he has coughed so much he has vomited. Otherwise he is in very good spirits.
Is there any point at all taking him to the doctor or is it just one of those things that takes a while to get over? it's quite difficult and certainly no fun going for GP appointments where we live...
Sorry if this is posted on the wrong board..

I always say this because I had it myself this summer. Whooping cough maybe? It comes with vomiting and most doctors don't diagnose it because it has become so rare due to the vaccine (which only works for 80% of all people so you can still get it). So if you take him to the docs I would demand to get checked for WC. I went back to docs 3 times, they were trying to tell me I was suddenly allergic to my cat.

Look WC symptoms up on the net and check if that might be it.
