How many toys do your DC's usually have lying about?

ie, do you leave out lots of toys all the time or do you put a toy away before another comes out? Most of our kids toys (DS1 2 year old, DS2 3 months) are in the living room and I'm getting a bit fed up with the constant clutter. Right now we have a wooden cube walker, a baby play gym, about 15 books, boxes of puzzles, a firestation, a fire engine, a sit on train, a traintrack, a cash register, a rocking horse, a campervan PLUS the toy box, all in the living room. In the kitchen there is a kids easel and baby bouncer. Then there is more in the nursery upstairs.

Not sure where to put everything! The boys are sharing their bedroom so there's not loads of space for toys in there now. Maybe I should put loads under the bed?

What do you do?

DD is 7y so it is easier to have them out of the way now. We don't have any toys lying around the living room these days. There are some books and a couple of games at the bottom of the stairs, from our holiday last week, which need putting away tomorrow. Rest of toys are in her bedroom, in the playroom/spare bedroom or under the stairs (outdoor toys). We have lots of storage boxes/drawers, dressing up box, etc. for toys so they all have homes.

DS and DD (10 and 3) share a room, so most of it is in there because it's quite a big room, I bought lots of storage stuff (including for under the bed) in Ikea, DD's puzzles play mats,peppa pig house ect I keep in my livingroom in a cupboard because she always ends up playing with those things in there anyway.
DD tends to get all her toys out at the same time when my back is turned, drives me insane

God no, that would drive me crazy! The rule for my DS (2) is two toys max at any one time - if he wants something else out, one has to be put away! Big toybox, chuck it all in. Also buy sofa on legs so storage boxes can be shoved underneath.

Also - recycle toys - take some out of circulation (put under bed, loft, whatever) and get them out in a couple of months when they're almost forgotten about.

I think everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a tidy house or a balanced amount of toys.

Personally I would find it hard to keep on top of the two out/ two back away rule although I would like to be this tidy- we have such a lot of different toys;

dd's bedroom fairly small so only a few in there, she has a built in cabin bed with books and favorite cuddly toys.

ds has built-in cupboards and underbed plastic boxes (farm set, train set,dressing up box, cars- some bits of dd's too) plus in his room is currently dd's dolls house and baby annabell cot .Also have a chest which all the cuddly toy collection live in.

living room has a few wicker baskets and a few storage boxes behind armchair.
