Help!! Ideas on how to beautify 2 year old dd's black nursery coat please

MiL has bought 2 lovely coats for my DD - very lucky girl. One is cream with a fluffy hood and having now convinced her to wear it, she loves it.

Her school coat on the other hand is plain black and practical, but still a really nice John Lewis coat (the plan was to go to Primark and get something cheap and glitzy but who am I to complain about a better quality coat?!). She is absolutely refusing to wear it and this morning was quite a battle.

I'm thinking that maybe she just wants to wear a pretty coat and would love some EASY ideas on how to glitz it up a little bit. Any thoughts?

would she go for a fluffy hat and mittens?

or how about a corsage - buy a ready made applique patch or a fabric flower from a haberdashery

ooh flowers sound good! tried the hat and mittens route already as we have some in. Had a serious strop on my hands this morning when trying to get out of the house so i'd make it to work on time!

Tommy - boys are so much easier to shop for than girls as well. Girls stuff in general is so hit and miss. A lot of it is truly hideous and although I LOVE having a little girl I love going out to buy stuff for my nephews/friends' little boys as it's sooooo easy!

Mrs Badger - any tips on habadashers to go to (online ideas)?

I have had a similar problem with some plain black jeans. She hates skinny leg jeans so we got some baggy black boys ones. However, she's experienceing some peer pressure at nursery re not wearing pink stuff so we have glammed up her jeans.

I googled "embroidery stitches" and found some good online tutorials. We went and chose some silks together along with buttons in the shape of flowers, sequins and beads. Then I embroidered the legs. I used the buttons or sequins as centres and embroidered the petals around them. Appliqued the ribbon on to the pockets and voila - girly jeans.

I HATE sewing projects and failed it miserably at school but I quite enjoyed the challenge. It took two whole sessions of Strictly (mainly cos I stopped sewing for the dances!) to finish them and was more straightforward than I thought.

Boys aren't necessarily any easier - DS refused to wear his blue coat this morning as he wanted the red one (which was in the wash...)

What about a selection of badges to put on the coat? Your DD could choose a different one each day. Or just stickers if she's too young for badges.

am thinking (urgency wise) might head to accessorize at lunchtime to see if I can get a flowery hairclip which i can butcher and sew on after work tonight. Like the idea of embroidering with buttons - love buying that kind of thing for her but am a bit rubbish at sewing so will prob destroy the coat...

Swap the buttons for big bright coloured ones. You can buy online.

Hennes do some iron-on hello kitty patches.

Would you be able to embroider her initials on to the collar or pockets - she might like that? Also new buttons is very easy way to get it much more girly!
