DD's Nappy EXPLODED!

[Toothache]

I put dd (10mths) in the paddling pool on Wednesday. I left her Nappy and vest on as I always did with ds. After about half an hour I lifted her out to dry and dress her and she look pregnant! She had this massive bulge under her vest!

When I stripped her off all the clear crystaline gel stuff from inside the nappy had exploded in her vest!!!!! Couldn't believe how much there was! It's not dangerous is it????

you see... that's why you should use cloth nappies!!!!

i don't know much about disposables, but although there are lots of chemicals in them and stuff i wouldn't have thought it would have done her any harm...

Doubt if it's dangerous unless ingested. Not nice though. Why not put a swimming cossie on instead, which could catch any poos?

Marslady - I've got swim nappies, but it was a spur of the moment thing and I used to do this with Ds 3 yrs ago..... have Pampers nappies changed that much?

yeah because they keep making them more and more and more absorbant... so they'll soak up everything! and then explode.

I have no idea toothy, I used George Nappies. and I tend to put my babes in the paddling pool in cossies (to catch the poo) lol

the gel is NOT dangerous, (tho i wouldnt think it would be good to eat!)

i use pampers but recently they have been exploding and the mess the gel leaves all over the place when you have 2 toddlers is awful. i wouldnt think the gel is a danger as kids wear them but i would never put my kids at risk where they could eat it.You never know what could happen. Maybe its time for nappy companies to state it on there product packaging wheather the gel is harmful or not. After all we are just looking out for our children.

it may not be "harmful" per se... but i can't see that it's much good for them... all those chemicals on their skin.

as a one-off occurence i wouldn't be concerned... but if it was happening regularly then i might.

again, if nappies KEPT exploding, i would either change brand or change the nappy more frequently so it doesn't get so wet that it explodes!

i use the George nappies and they are fantastic.

Just had my order of Kushies delivered this morning though so they are now in the washing machine ready to be used!

Each to their own. I use both. But i dont like pampers - never have.

no.. i'm not going to get into a debate... i just wondered what fivealives problem is? she seems to have issues with anyone trying to use environmentally friendly products (did you see the ecover thread?)

and to come out with something like "everything's a chemical"... that's ridiculous.

Just because something is a "chemical" doesn't automatically mean that it is harmful, which is what you inferred.

yes, because i don't believe that the chemicals in disposable nappies are very good if the nappy explodes and they are regularly coming into contact with the skin.

i know of several people who use cloth because disposable nappies have caused bad reactions on their childrens skin... so I do have reasons for believing this.

do you have reasons to believe that they are harmless?

The literature would lead me to believe that the super-absorbing polymer is non-toxic - thousands of rigorous tests over decades of use.

Nappies aren't designed to explode, nor are they designed to be dunked in a pool.

The pool chemicals and/or bacteria are more of a concern than the inside of the nappy.
