Presents for my 9 year old dd. I have no clue what to buy her.

Her room has some half-dead Bratz in it with their feet removed from their body - so obv she is past them

She wants a DS but ha! over my dead body (dd2 is too young for one and they will just fight over it and scream the whole bloody house down)

I am thinking Worst Witch books because she likes them

and then I don't know

she is not particularly trendy as yet; likes HSM and Hannah Montana (even though she has never seen an episode of the latter - she's just taken a liking to her friend's lunchbox)

It's possible only you will know what your DD will like, people can suggest things, but they don't know your daughter.

Why don't you have a look at argos/ebay and get some ideas. Has your daughter said she might like something in particular?

apart from the Nintendo DS and as I said, that would cause far more problems than it solves; dd2 is a good deal stronger and louder than her

please people suggest things, and if she wouldn't like them I can just not buy them

DD is coming up to her 10th birthday and the only thing shes mentioned wanting so far is an iPod. She is into her music at the moment.

Does your DD like music? It doesn't have to be an iPod, MP3 players start really cheaply

Why can't you get her a DS if you can afford it? It sounds like she is being "punished" because her younger sister won't like it. Younger siblings have to learn that sometimes they are too young for things.

She'll be getting in to the really girly sleepover age won't she? So a nice bag she can use for sleepovers? Cool bLankets and cushions also popular round here. A bean bag?

I agree with MelonCauli, I don't think it's fair on your dd not to get her a DS just because her sibling will whinge.

Get her a DS. I agree its not really fair about the younger sibling as younger siblings should not dictate when the older child gets gifts based on if the younger child is old enough yet! It's your elder dd'd birthday and she deserves to be treated o her own merits so if she deserves a jolly special gift like a ds then so be it

I am not a fan of children over using stuff like this and my own 7 and 9 year old ds's bth have ds's that are only used for a certain amount of time at weekends and wven then not every weekend. But at her age I suspect most of her friends have ds's and she may feel left out not being able to chat about the latest games etc.

In addition to the sister thing, she has a very short concentration span due to her cerebral palsy and at present can neglect reading, schoolwork etc in order to watch TV/ go on the Toonatik or CBBC websites. She's falling a bit behind in reading etc because of this.

I want her to be able to sit still and concentrate on a book for 20 mins before I provide yet more screen time

Could you give her a budget then take her somewhere nice to have a browse? We always take DD to Bluewater in the new year. She has a November birthday so she saves birthday and xmas money and has a good old spend!

Karaoke Machine - we got one for DD from a local music shop - who also cut discs of your own choice of songs.

DD is 9 this year. She's asked for a Playmobil Roman Ampitheatre (was late coming to the Playmobil), she loves Build a Bear, so there'll be one or two bears bought I suspect, she likes her DVDs and CDs so an MP4 player might be in the offing and we are considering a new Wii game for her.

I have to say the DS was one of the best gifts we ever bought her and though she doesn't play with it much, it's a good option for long journeys and for packing light. I appreciate that you want to limit the screen time though. I do wonder whether DD would read more if she didn't have the Wii/Ds.

My 9yo ds has gone into some early teen phase of spending all his time in his room with the CD player on full blast. Have to say I quite like it... brings back memories of my younger days

He does have a DS (saved up for it for a long time), though like you I was reluctant to let him have it before he was a fluent reader. His other screen time is limited (only allowed TV and DVDs at limited times)

I agree with you about not getting a DS because of having too much screen time. DD did not have hers until last Christmas (aged 11) by which time she had a keen love of reading and other (non-screen) pastimes already established. She doesn't use it all that much actually, but really enjoys it on car journeys in particular.

Another poster mentioned Klutz craft kits - I would second this: there are loads of different ones available and they are very good. DD has enjoyed the paper fashions one and the beadling animals one, among others.

might it be an idea, if she's having problems reading, to buy her a cd player and some audio books?
there are some great stories on cd for her age and for a lower age if she wants something easier to concentrate on.
like some classics (bbc audio does some great dramatizations) or animal ark?
