How to deal with the incredible leaking boy?

DS2 is 5.5 months and has always had a magic ability to leak out of nappies - cloth, disposable, you name it, he's leaked out of it.

He was going through the night ok in a Moltex disposable, but for the last two weeks he's leaked every single night. Always up the side and up onto his back, never out of the legs.

He was near the top weight for the size he was in so I got some of the next size up and he's still leaking out of them. It's not an absorbency issue as the nappy isn't full by any means when he wakes up wet.

Any thoughts, tips, anyone had this experience? We're fixing the nappy on tight, pointing his willy downwards etc etc and yet he still manages to leak. We tried cloth at night but he was soaked really quickly (we use Fluffles and Motherease wraps) even with boosters etc, so we went back to disposables for nighttimes. He has to be kept as dry as possible as he has a big haemangioma (strawberry birthmark) on his groin which will ulcerate and scar if he gets nappy rash.

Please help, can't take the 4am nappy/babygro/sleeping bag change much longer, plus there's too much washing!

Hello! we went to the kite festival hence not back to the thread until now. DS2 is now in bed wearing:

  • one size 2 Fluffle with booster (he's still in size 1 during the day, so I'm hoping a size 2 will buy us some extra absorbency)
  • one bamboo booster
  • one fleece liner
  • one fleece wrap
  • one thick layer of Metanium over his birthmark
  • one 9-12 months babygro, lots of room in there so no nappy compression
  • one sleeping bag

His bottom is about an inch higher than the rest of him!

I can't find my one and only Bamboozle, think I might have lent it to someone to try, so will have to retrieve it before I can try that combination.

ilovemydog, that would be really kind, I will CAT you if that's ok.

swampster, thank you for name compliments! I can't claim credit for it, the wonderful Dorothy Parker came up with it first. I might have a look at Bedbugs, for some reason Wee Notions have never appealed to me. Think it might be the name

claudia - I will try Pampers Active if this doesn't work - I've been trying to use the biodegradable nappies as much as possible, but there comes a point where it's sleep or saving the planet, and it's a tough choice.....

Was the kite festival this weekend? Darn, missed it yet again. And the Organic Festival, but went last year and got soooo pissed on all those free samples of cider .

Yes, CAT me and I'll send a BBH to the posh part of town

Yep, it was good fun although DS1 managed to get a rash on his tummy from rolling in grass. Didn't stay for too long though as DS2 was knackered and the wind got up and was quite chilly by about 3pm.

Some brilliant kites though, and good displays.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO LEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKSSSSSS!
Not a dribble.

And not only that, but when I opened up his nappy his skin was nice and dry.

Hooray!

Whst fresh - what size bamboozle are you after?

I have 25 a few and could send you one.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 14/09/2009 09:14

That's really kind oopsacoconut, but I know who I lent mine to so am hoping she'll return it this week (have texted her) so don't worry. But thank you for very kind offer!

25 eh? Small nappy addiction going on there....?

oh yeah, I have at least 25 Bamboozles, but they're my favourite nappy, so don't have any to spare, I'm afraid!

As for Wee Notions, never got "into them" like a lot of cloth addicts, but I do have 1 WN Northern Lights and find it very nice indeed!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 15/09/2009 20:38

So he leaked again last night, but I'm hoping it was because the fleece wrap wasn't on tight enough.

Tonight he's in a Bamboozle with a triple fold bamboo booster, a stay dry liner and a Motherease Rikki wrap. Anyone want to bet if he leaks or not?

Go on , tell us. Dry this morning??

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 16/09/2009 12:12

Nope, no leaks! However, the nappy was SOAKED, but I hadn't prewashed it, so I'm hoping that after a few washes it won't be so bad. And the stay dry liner stopped his skin from being wet, so it was pretty good actually.

Let me know if you solve this one, as I have this problem too.

alypaly · 16/09/2009 20:52

another one with a Y..sorry..ive changed the thread

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/09/2009 22:02

You definitely need to wash a new nappy a few times to get it up to full absorbency so it should improve.

Octothechildherder · 16/09/2009 22:30

Last night I used a dream dri with a small prefold in and it didn't leak.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 17/09/2009 10:15

Another night, another nappy.....

Have ordered some Bamboozles but couldn't wash and dry the first one in time for tonight, so it was back to Fluffle/booster/fleece liner/fleece wrap last night. He didn't leak, but the fleece wrap was quite damp on the outside.

When my new Bamboozles arrive I think it's going to be Bamboozle/booster/fleece liner/Motherease wrap for us. It seems to be the winning combination.

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/09/2009 00:54

No, I don't think you can beat a Motherease wrap for leak-proofing.

I use a TotsBots fleece wrap at night simply because it seems to be better for my LO's eczema to get a break from PUL wraps. I did try another prettier fleece wrap made by a WAHM a couple of times but it wasn't up to an all-night session.
