Switching to cloth nappies - a few questions

Hulla · 30/08/2009 09:57

I am seriously considering switching to cloth nappies. I am feeling increasingly uncomfortable with throwing away disposables and I don't like seeing the crystal-gel-bits on her skin.

We tried a couple of Close Pop-In bamboo nappies and got on well with those and I have noticed a faster drying version on Kiddiecare:

Here

  • Can anyone tell me if 10 is enough?
  • Is anything else we'll need? I am sure there must be.
  • We travel around visiting family quite a lot - is it good manners/more practical to take disposables?
  • Are nurseries ok with cloth nappies? DD will start nursery for a couple of days a week from age 1.

Many thanks for any info/tips

Thanks Hulla, just bought one just to test it out before I shell out for a whole lot - but just need to do a few washes on it first!

This is great advice:

hulla you might want to try a few different second hand nappies to see which ones suit your LO before shelling out.

Recommendations are OK but I have now found that what was good for baby one wasnt also they best at the same age for baby 2 etc. I have changed a lot of the original ideas I had by trying some second hand ones. See if someone on freecycle will give you some to try first. Thats what I did.

Thanks everyone, I'll have a look on there at the weekend and let you know how we get on.

I just bought 3 Bambinex nappies in the sale at Boots (store - doesn't seem to be online) for £2.50 each. I'll give them a try!

Hey ladies, had my DD1 in georgous little pop-ins today - very happy with them and feel the addiction starting!

Any reason to keep shopping around if the experiences (with both poo and wee) were good ones? Or do I just go for broke and get some more? (think I'm hooked!)

BubbaAndBump · 02/09/2009 20:31

Btw, think I've found a better deal than at Kiddicare for the pop-inshere as promotional code from earlier didn't work

mumface · 02/09/2009 21:53

Thats the place i already mentioned earlier in this thread! that the code is for. It was not for kiddicare.

BubbaAndBump · 02/09/2009 22:09

Ahh, that'll be why it didn't work at kiddicare

thanks mumface

How absorbent are close pop in nappies?

BubbaAndBump · 03/09/2009 16:49

they're the ones I'm using alyson and so far so good! bamboo is more absorbent than microfibre (which is what the liners are made of) - babipur have good offers on trial packs at the moment...

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 16:57

Tempted, soo tempted! Good for childminder. Yes thats it. I need to buy some for the childminder.

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 17:11

Can you put all in ones like the pop in one in the tumble dryer?

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 17:27

Also, are you using the bamboo version or the microfibre version? I know microfibre dries really quickly (good for winter!) but Im concerned that some absorbency might be lost.

BubbaAndBump · 03/09/2009 18:32

yep ~ do it for the childminder

yep to tumbledrying (on a low heat). outer bit is almost dry just from the wash spin tbh

microfibre outer layer (nappy cover essentially), bamboo soaker/liner/booster etc -

just ordered 20!

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 18:52

Youre as bad as me!

BubbaAndBump · 03/09/2009 18:58

They're lovely though. You can also get bamboo washable wipes. Kicking myself that I didn't get some in that order (may have to visit again)

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 19:02

OK so I ordered one of those 10 packs and the discount code F300 worked (thanks for person who posted this). I didnt know which colours I preferred so I ordered a multipack. For the childminder of course. She will like them wont she?

alysonpeaches · 03/09/2009 19:04

Alyson goes off to cover tracks ... I remember when I used to sneak new shoes/dress into house without DH seeing, now its nappies.

BubbaAndBump · 03/09/2009 19:19

The discount code works on calculation, but there is a note when you look at the product that says no further discounts apply, so they'll phone you tomorrow to see if you still want to go ahead - still a great offer though

lol at covering nappy tracks!

Octothechildherder · 04/09/2009 09:08

Don't tumble dry the outer!

BubbaAndBump · 04/09/2009 14:12

oops, yes, good point octo - only the soakers

My bumper pack of pop-ins arrived this morning, just in the wash now - very excited (a bit over-excited if I'm honest! - sure my life used to be more fun!)

alysonpeaches · 04/09/2009 14:27

Bubba and bump, yes that happened to me, they emailed me to see if I still wanted them and I said yes and paid the difference.

Right, so I cant tumble dry the whole thing just the soaker. Ah, I was wanting a quick turnround option for the childminder. I suppose I have to see the nappy in the flesh before I can comment on this though. Hopefully they wont be long. Bit stupid of me to order so near the weekend though, DH is off tomorrow!

alysonpeaches · 04/09/2009 14:38

Bubba and bump, did you get microfibre or bamboo? I noticed you mentioned bamboo further up when I re-read the thread. Im hoping the microfibre will be absorbent enough as well as being quick drying.

BubbaAndBump · 04/09/2009 14:54

Was feeling a bit gutted on that alyson - trial one was all bamboo but the pack arrived (today already!! hurrahhhh!) and the night time boosters are still bamboo but normal soakers are microfibre but having just taken them out of the wash and hung them on the line, they are so nearly dry already, so just will have to see how absorbent they are compared to the bamboo...

alysonpeaches · 04/09/2009 20:42

Ah, so I cant put the lot in the dryer. Oh well.

Bubba and Bump, do you have bamboo or microfibre? How many days did they take?
