So carrying on, when you were young, what things did you think where a treat but now realise were really simple?

I have loved reading the other thread i started, so now i was wondering what you all thought were great treats but were actually really simple.

Walking to Grandmas houes alone (only down the road but a huge adventure when your 6)

All three of us sleeping in my sisters "big" bed.

My mum letting me camp out inside a Duvet cover.

Being allowed to sleep in a cammp i had made in my bedroom at 4pm with snacks and a good Enid Blyton book.

Sleeping in a tent in the Garden.

Going to work with my mum.

When my Dad built an Extension onto our house, my mum told me it was going to be a bathroom and i was staying the week at my Nans when it being finished off, they had actually made me my own bedroom as a suprise, i cried i was so happy...

We ate out once per year on holiday - gammon and pineapple with chips and knickerbocker glory for pudding!!

Oh how lovely. That's just like Milly Molly Mandy when they turned the jam storage loft into a beautiful bedroom for her. So she didn't have to share with Muvver and Farver any more...

Green apples sliced up with sugar sprinkled on top. Only allowed when I was poorly (otherwise they were eaten whole and without sugar). I'm a simple soul to please!!!

My grandad used to buy one Mars Bar and share it between four of us and it always felt like a huge treat.

Lucozade when ill!

Stale bread that was 'baked' dry in the aga, we called it fairy toast!

Sliced white bread was the ultimate luxury item in our house (at least from a kids point of view)

Lucozade when ill was a massive treat on our house when ill too. Do you remember the crinkly orange paper that surrounded the bottle? This was in the days when Lucozade was bought in the chemist's rather than a grocery shop and way before it went all "isotonic"!

When my mum had to work late and dad made the tea - we had fried egg and chips!

My dad used to give us all his red wine gums - big treat for us, and I thought it was a huge sacrifice on his part till I realised he actually didn't like the red ones.

weetabix with jam and butter on- now realise we'd just run out of milk!

Mr kipling cakes at my nan's house- can't believe I thought these were more of a treat than my mum's homemade stuff.

Going to work with my dad- eating his biscuits and sitting on his twirly chair.

going to the library-possibly my favourite place.

Having tea on a blanket in front of the tv.

Being allowed to listen to the charts on Sunday on the radio instead of the boring stuff my parents listened to.
Most of mine involve food -no surprise there then.

Ooh yes - we used to have a library VAN - I loved it!

Green jelly and evaporated milk;
Playing Newmarket with pennies;
Lemonade and icecream floaters (gah but they felt like a treat at the time!);
Taking the pop bottles back and then buying fruit salads (for me) and black jacks (my sister) with the money.

Going to my Nana's for tea and having Grandad's home made chips

My dad buying me a Beano comic (only ever happened when I was ill)

Going to stay at my Nana and Grandad's for 2 or 3 nights - I would pack my little suitcase, it felt like a real adventure!

Helping my Nana bake a cake to have for pudding after our Sunday roast

Going anywhere in a car - My parents never had a car so this was a rare but very special treat

Going for walks in the woods with my dad and being allowed to get as dirty as I wanted, we would also pick blackberries while we were there and take them to my Nana who would make them into jam. We used to eat it with warm home made soda bread.

Getting a takeaway for tea - happened very, very rarely so when it did it was like all our christmasses had come at once

I loved going to work with my Dad! He was a Swimming Pool builder and it was so much fun to eat Snadwiches wrapped in brown paper and play with the work Dog!

being allowed to run around the forest and shout, play hide and seek instead of going to the beach like cousins and some other family members thought we should (insidentally sand makes me feel ill and my father and sister burn dreadfully despite factor 30)

Taking the pop bottles back - what joy! Is dandelion and burdock really made from dandelions? My Nana had a pop van come to her house - very exciting.

Discovering an Enid Blyton I'd not read at the library.

Op's surprise bedroom is one of the nicest things I've heard!

My dad used to go to the baker every Saturday morning and bring back magic ice cream cones that didn't melt. Only as an adult did I realise the 'ice cream' was marshmallow and bloody horrible at that

Oooooh yes toast from the open fire spread with homemade jam. There were four of us and my dad could barely toast it fast enough.

Being able to choose any cake I wanted from the bakery window whilst on holiday.

Think all mine would be food related.

Midnight feasts - when I stayed at my friend's house her mum would let up make up a biscuit tin filled with cake and sweets. Er would go to bed, but stay up til midnight and eat it.
Her mum also used to bring us breakfast in bed and she had 9 children!

We would go to bed - not Er!

Sellotape! It was issued by mum in half inch pieces, and only to be used very sparingly. At 19 when I left home and bought my first ever roll, I handed over a tenner in the shop, only to get a lot of change and discover how cheap it is!!

Janeite and Luckylady, I can't believe how young you are (checked on your profiles). I can remember taking pop bottles back too, but I am very old! When did that stop I wonder?

Being put in my parents' bed when I was ill- almost worth having mumps for, why it felt so special I don't know.
