How do you get a mobility scooter into a car?

My dad needs a mobility scooter. How do you get them in the back of a car? Do you have to have a special sort of car? Am a bit confused. Thanks.

It's something I was wondering the other day because it's something I might need in the future when I can't use the pushchair for support.

I have no idea about the answer, but the place where your Pa is buying the scooter should be able to give him advice and if they can't, find a shop which can!

My uncle has one which folds and is light enough for my aunt to lift into the boot. Will email them to ask the manufacturer if you want.

Been wondering about those as well...
what you do with it if you need to go on train, faced with train station steps, or if you go to the shops and can't take it in? bike lock? how do you keep joy-riding kids off it?

You can either get a scooter that is light enough to lift into the boot and folds down. Or get one that comes apart, or get a hoist. Don't, what ever you do, go to Autochair for a hoist, as I have been is dispute with them for several years and they are dreadful!

Hi sorry for the very late reply i've just joined. I use a wheelchair, before my condition went down hill i used a scooter and a stick. You can get hoists to lift them electrically or you can get cars with ramps or tail lifts.

These can be looked into with the motability scheme or you can have them fitted privatly. A motability roadshow (if you can get to one) is a good idea as they will explain all the options and costs.

little scooters can dismantled/be hoisted into a car boot after the scooter seat has been removed.

big "road" scooters are more difficult...we were recommended to get a mpv (have an alhambra) and have a telescopic hoist fitted to lift it in and out of the back. Wecan fit the scooter, me, dh and dd in with a reasonable amount of luggage but the scooter does take up a fair amount of room

you can take smaller scooters on trains (book place and you will get an escort on and off trains and between connections)but not larger

if i have to leave my scooter anywhere, i just take the key with me then it is no good to joyriders....have to take a chance with common or garden vandals but have never had a problem yet

there is a magazine called able which has a lot of mobility info...i pick it up free at merry hill, don't know if they have it at other westfield shopping centres

we went here they were excellent. Had to spend most of a day there to have the big hoist and hand controls fitted but it was a pretty little town with nice pubs/cafes etc
