9 month old wants to sleep on his tummy all the time.......

.....but every book or article I read says that tummy sleeping is a major risk factor for SIDS, but my ds2 (just) 9 months old gets put on his back and turns over onto his tummy to sleep. If I try to turn him, he wakes. He also sleeps on his tummy when in bad with us too... Ds1 never did this til he was much older.

Ds2 is a big baby - 24 lbs - and has been able to roll over since he was 3.5 months old. He is crawling and pulling up too....am I worrying over nothing? or right to be concerned?.......help!

Once they can turn themselves there is nothing you can do.

My almost 10 month old is always on her tummy or side as did DD1. Both were always put to bed on their back and more often than not tuned over, round and every which way! And if he's comfortable then its a shame to disturb them.

I think once they are old enough, or developed enough, to be able to turn themselves over, then they are past the riskiest stage. The problem is more when they are tiny and can't choose to turn over by themselves.

My nearly 3yo DS has slept on his tummy ever since he could turn over.

There is nothing you can do, just remind yourself that he will sleep better and longer if he's in a position he finds comfortable!

Does he have a dummy? Apparently they can have a protective effect against SIDS

mine turned over too...younger than 9 months I seem to recall. When I mentioned it to the dr, he said just let them do it..I guess you can't do much else. Oh, and both mine had dummies...both are very articulate..didn't inhibit their speech...and they don't suck their thumbs as a result.

No he doesnt - my ds1 did, but ds2 is a thumb sucker! He is so different from ds1 in every way that its like I have never done all this before IYSWIM?

from 6 months you can let them find their own sleep position as the risk of SIDS is much much lower.

Agree with all of these replies - my DD rolled very early and I used to continually worry about her sleeping on her front but the HV said that once they can do it there's nothing you can do to stop them. She also went through a spell of sleeping with her bum in the air which looked really uncomfortable to me.
