"that's not my muslin"

My DS (2.5) has muslins as comforters. Over the last few days he's started telling us they're not his muslins, and getting very upset searching for "my muslin". I've found all of his muslins in the house, all of which have been rejected. I've offered him his baby brother's muslins (different colour) which I've been told are "DS2's muslins, not my muslins". Some of his muslins are dirty, some recently washed. They are all otherwise identical. I don't think we've recently lost any. Sometime's he's OK, but sometimes he's distraught because he can't find his muslin.

Any ideas?

Do you think one had a stain on it that's now washed, and so he can't identify it?

Or have you changed detergents and the smell is different?

Oh god no this is like if we wash teddy.... Theo's only 14 months but if we wash teddy days of crying because he doesn't smell the same (at least we've guessed that's why) DH says he remembers feeling that way about his teddy too...

i washed ds's noonoo the other day and he saw it through the glass of the washer and proceeded to cry throwing himself at the washer as if noonoo was dying a dispicable torturous death and he needed to save it.
Felt like the worst mother in the world, and was going to ring social services to report myself

Ah, anorak - that could be it (flash of light moment)... I don't think it's the stain, as I try to wash them regularly. But we've recently changed detergents, as the Ecover was bothering DS2's excema so we changed to Surcare. Am reluctant to buy a box of Ecover just to wash DS1's muslins in - do you think he'll get used to it? They are both low-scent detergents so I'm surprised he noticed, but the timing's right... you're inspired - but what do I do?

Hide them in his bed so they pick up HIS smell again. If he won't sleep with it, stuff it in when he has just got up. One day and it will smell right again

that didn't work, Crunchie - he's slept with three last night, brought them downstairs this morning, but then rejected them when he got home from pre-school this lunchtime.

Maybe the smell had worn off and he forgot... try for a couple of days, Theo doesn't like teddy for about 3 days after washing..

fastasleep we get the same thing when we wash Bunny - and it has to be done about every 4 or 5 weeks because of the colour, smell and general ming at that point.

We wait for a trip to the MIL's because she has a tumble dryer lol... otherwise all hell breaks loose... they do get minging don't they - bleuch!

I like to get Bunny at highest ming point and put him on DP's shoulder, saying to DS, "Bunny would love a kiss from Daddy, wouldn't he?

I did that once and DH retched because DS had slyly puked on him!

Sorry but I go with the change in powder or fabric softener theory. You will need to bite the bullet and buy another packet of the old stuff

Found a teddy with an old milk spill on him last week, had been playing "hunt the hum" for days. He was in a toybox, head down, I almost rang Rentokil

surely he'll get used to the new powder eventually? won't he? I can't face washing his muslins separately each week, and I can't return to the old powder in general as it's irritating DS2's skin. No - I'm not destined to yet another 'type' of washing to sort, for different treatment?

are you sure it's the powder? my ds is fixated on the label on his muslin. Only a certain label will do - the one with the pic of the teddy bear rubbed off!
we are now at stage where I have to keep sewing old label onto new musses each time they wear out and get holes in.
He will shout the house down if I cant find his 'special' mus - even though we have a whole drawer full of the darn things.
