MLA / Harvard / MHRA and formatting

Hello all,

I will be submitting my language / lit thesis in Sept and have been told by the university I can use any of the conventions of referencing as long as it remains consistent. I have been vaguely using the MHRA but hate references and wonder if one of the others is better or has some magic tool that will do it all for me...

Also the formatting guidelines say left border 40mm right hand 20mm but it makes my text look as if it's in a bizarre column, is it suposed to look like that? And how on Word do I adjust the top and bottom margins?

I am lost and confused!
