How to deal with regression?

My DS is 2yrs 9mth and has been happily out of nappies for a good couple of months now. I waited until I was pretty sure he was ready, then did the cold turkey approach and after 3 days he'd pretty much cracked it. He's since been just about 100%, tells me when he needs to go and is now getting the hang of weeing standing up (which is fun?!).

However, just this last week or so he's started to just pee himself without warning, every other day or so. He's just done it now whilst sitting on my lap in front of the TV. He knows he's done it because he immediately says he needs new trousers.

My first instinct is to be cross with him for not telling me he needed to go (when I know he's perfectly capable), but that's probably not the best approach.

Has anyone else had experience of this and how did you handle it?

We put DD back in nappies for a week or so which seemed to do the trick.
