How do I potty train in a non-behaviorist way?

I don't consider myself a UC parent, but aspects of it make sense to me and I do not like behaviorist techniques, basically becasue of the mess they made of me and my dh as we were growing up.
I am keen to potty train ds as he is nearly 3 and I think he is quite capapble tbh.
How though? He is resistant to removing his nappy a lot of the time, though he will wear his big boy pants for a few hours if he is in the right mood. If I push it, he digs his heels in iyswim?

So, any advice?

Hi nicky, what are 'behaviourist' techniques? (Sorry, am very dense, but have just been potty training dd and am not sure whether what we did was behaviourist or not, and thought I'd better check before I say how we approached it!).

not sure about techniques either. pullups?

no idea what uc or behaviourist methods are but can tell you that roleplay worked fabulously with my dd. she was well ready physically, just not mentally, so one day we did loads of playing going to the loo with her dollies and it seemed to do the trick. we also skipped out the potty part and went straight onto the toilet plus one of those mini children's seats things

So glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what UC and behaviourist are..

nicky I would say that if ds is really resistant then I wouldn't push it. It only worked with dd when she decided she didn't want to wear nappies any more (and even then it took 3 weeks for her to start saying when she needed to go [sometimes].)

Roleplay worked well for me too. I used the site www.thebestpottytraining.com they have details about how to best do role play.
