Calgon in the Nappy wash

Hi,
I don't know if anyone else has had a problem with this but my nappies had the elastic fail and after talking to the supplier it would appear that using calgon can degrade the elastic.

My nappies are Littlelambs, I don't know if it is a problem with other brands too, but they are now going to start advising customers against using calgon because of this problem. The advice is to use white vinegar instead.

I just thought I would pass this on in the hope that I can save someone else the problem.

OH MY GOD!!!

I just put a batch of nappies in with some calgon!!!!!

Is it just elastic? Cos ours are terries....

It is the elastic, and the velcro is starting to go but the nappies are getting on for a year old. The elastic started to go after about six months and has now completely disintegrated. The fabric is fine so terries should be okay.

Interseting. Do you know why?

No I don't, I can only assume that one of the chemicals in it reacts with the elastic, just like bleach and high temperatures can. I know Littlelamb advise against using nappy sanitisers as they are known to affect the life span of the elastic (they are pretty much the same as bleach).

It may just be the particular type/make of elastic that used in this brand but I thought it was worth mentioning as a general thing.

I use the Lidl and Aldi own brand equivalents (our water is ultra hard), and havent noticed our clothes losing their elasticity. Nappies are washed often, of course, maybe thats why.

I've got Bambinex bamboo, and we don't put Calgon in with the nappy wash, but we do use Napisan in the bucket and then a little in each wash. The nappies are on month 9 of constant use and I haven't noticed any problems with the elastic as yet....
