Worried about ds who has a dislike to people looking at him

Hi
Its a bit of a stupid one really but I am a little worried about my 8 year old ds who seems to have a thing about people mainly other children or teenagers looking at him when we are out and about in the car.
It mostly happens on the way to school with ds going mad that this person or that person is staring at him and that if they keep doing it he is going to stare back and stick his tongue out.
I have tried to get him out of this and have said he is been silly but still he persists with this.
Is this normal behaviour for an 8 year old I worry about him growing up with this paranoia of his.
I have tried to explain that people are prbably not staring at him but that they are just looking around in general and that sometimes they just happen to look at him.
I don,t want him to be a trouble maker when he grows up wanting to punch the first person that looks at him.
Am I worrying about nothing or are boys like this.
His favourite word for anybody that he feels are staring at him is stupid div.
Sorry for the silly post but this is getting to me.

Hi have you asked him why? Is it possible that someone has made a rude gesture to him previously and this is him protecting himself from it?
Maybe point out when HE is looking/staring at someone he is just looking and he isn't thinking of anything mean about them and that looking at someone doesn't have to be negative.

Hi sleepyeyes I will try your suggestion.

I will try and get more to the bottom of it with him he just rambles on that they should be taught that its rude to stare.

Is it possible he is feeling self conscious about his looks or has low self-esteem?
