Should I give potty training a go?

DD is 2 in a couple of weeks and I've been introducing her to her potty for a few weeks. I was advised to let her "make friends" with it! For about 2 weeks now after her tea I've been sitting her on it and nearly every night she's done a poo. Last night she was running round without her nappy on, went to the potty of her own accord and did a poo. We found her trying to empty it down the loo. About 5 minutes later she ran to it again and sat down and did a wee. I wasn't planning on even thinking about potty training until August but I'm wondering if she's ready now. Do you think she's ready or is she a bit young?

Oh god no - nappies all the way!

At the moment she's still running screaming from knickers anyway

We'll have toilets and potties on standby just incase she gets stroppy and decides she HAS to be a big girl though...

flamesparrow · 15/05/2005 23:14

Yes, she is gonna be bridesmaid - with my friend's little man as pageboy... they are gonna steal the show!

Surfermum · 15/05/2005 23:15

Don't blame you. I was prepared to be on my knees in homage to you if you were going nappyless!

Dd is 20 months and now telling me every time she wets or dirties a nappy that she needs changed. I am beginning to think about toilet training her. How does this work with nurseries though? She is at nursery part-time and her nursery nurse voluntered she thinks she is ready to be toilet-trained. She'll no doubt be fine at home with me asking her all the time whether she needs to go but she won't be getting one to one attention at nursery like that.

Surfermum · 15/05/2005 23:35

Sorry RHM dd doesn't go to a nursery, so I don't know but hopefully someone else here will.

I'm not sure how it works with nursery either....

It could end up being the slow process like with me and B (which I'm not all that unhappy about because it means that I CAN choose if she wears nappies at the wedding ) - pull ups at nursery, and if she tells them she needs to go then all well and good, and training at home. It would take a bit longer, but is one way round it?

99redballoons · 17/05/2005 15:48

Hi girls, glad you've had successful weekends My ds had his tongue-tie op yesterday, very quick, and went well. He was in pull-ups all day in the hospital and had a wee three times whilst there (but then again he hadn't drunk anything all morn) and then had two HUGE accidents by the end of the day at home cos he was soooo tired and had made up a days worth of drink in a few hours I was really pleased about the whole day really.

RHM, not sure about nursery either. One of my m&b friends has her ds at nursery 3 days a week (full days) and 2 with her. She has just started to keep him nappy free when home with her (he's just 2). It's been a bit hit and miss but no harm in giving it a go. I would have a chat with your nursery nurse to see what she suggests about your dd. I'm sure they must go through this process with nearly all of the kids that are with them from nappy to post-nappy days. Let us know what they say.

Gosh, aren't we the proud mum's with our little-uns!

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:59

Mine is poorly with an ear infection - refused to wear a nappy, then woke up and had a high temp and wee-d all over the sofa, and sobbed cos she was wet

She has now taken off her pull ups again, and is refusing to wear anything under her trousers... I sense a soggy trip to the doctor's ahead!!!!!

I'm glad the tongue tie op went well - My friend's DS had one at just a few weeks old One of the first things I asked when B was born was if her tongue was ok because of seeing JJ have to go in for his, and DP's is tied too.

99redballoons · 17/05/2005 22:03

hope dd is better, flamesparrow, poor love.

yes, it's surprising how common they actually are. Apparently 17% of children have one, but of varying degree.

speak to you tomorrow

Surfermum · 17/05/2005 23:35

Scores on the doors today - no accidents and still dry after her nap! . Went for coffee at Sparkler's this morning and was paranoid that she was going to wee somewhere in Sparkler's very immaculate house!

Hope your little ones recover soon.

I'm loving this thread!!

Its great to have people to go through it with too.

B is much much happier today - slept through the night without sobbing, and woke with only a slight temp (it was insanely high yesterday). She is currently sat on the floor emptying all my babywipes - but I didn't like them much anyway, so think I'll just wash em ready for reusables for the next baby...

Anyway - the plans for today are - bare bum while we sort out the house for a bit this morning, and then off to Psychomum's later (haven't asked her if she wants me over yet ), and I think she can go in knickers or just bare bummed. No nappy at all methinks! Psycho has had 5 kiddies, so is used to puddles....

99redballoons · 18/05/2005 14:19

Hope you're both having a good day Glad B is getting better FS.

We made it through the weekly music class again today and off to a friends this afternoon. He's told me twice today he's wanted to go (whilst fully clothed) and no accidents as yet! Even though I'm practically running up the stairs to him when he wakes after his nap he's still doing a wee when he wakes in his pullups. We were doing so well at the start with this but have now gone very backwards. It was so cute yesterday I asked "have you done wee wee in bed today?" and he said, holding his thumb and index finger only slightly apart, "little bit mummy, only little bit"... bless. He's obviously trying so hard...

Definitely helps taking the potty out onto the patio/garden when they're out playing and don't want to stop to relieve themselves. Ds is now happy to sit down when I bring it to him (Have learnt not to say 'do you need a wee' when I know he does cos he ends up having an accident before I'm able to grab the potty! Now I just bring it to him and then ask)

What have you decided RHM ?

99redballoons · 18/05/2005 14:21

PS. love this thread too. It's great support. None of my friends are doing this at the mo(except the one that's just done it with her dd). Mum and mil have been good too though, cos I guess it's going back to how they used to do potty training, it was always early back then, so they say! They were shocked to hear the avg seems to be about 2.5-3.5yrs!

coldtea · 18/05/2005 14:40

99redballoons-sorry for gate crashing this post, i saw your name & had to ask, how was your ds' operation?

flamesparrow · 18/05/2005 21:48

Hmmm... today was... interesting??

We went to the shops and the park (all in knickers - no idea why she agreed to wear them), and we had teeny dribbles - enough to wet knickers, but then she would notice, and come and use the potty.

Then - she fell off a slide. Understandably got distressed and weed lots.

That's not all though...

She now has a broken arm and is in plaster!!!!

Think we'll leave training for a few days

99redballoons · 19/05/2005 11:47

OMG flamesparrow! How awful. Hope she is ok. And all of this straight after the ear infection. hugs]

Hi coldtea! Well, the spot cleared up thankfully with the antibiotics. A third doc thought it was molluscum too when I took ds for a checkup before the op. All gone now though The op went fine. It's a new children's ward (open a year now) and was very well kitted out with toys and very clean. A very long day (in a 08:30, out at 18:00) considering his op only lasted 10mins! but he is fine. No effect on his talking and he said "better" when asked how is his tongue feeling now! He seems happier. How are your two?

coldtea · 20/05/2005 12:21

99-I'm really glad it went well. I had been thinking of you.

My two have been poorly with a bugi had ds off school at the beginning of the week & now dd has caught it. I was also at casualty with dd yesterday as she had to have a raisin removed from her nostril! This is the 2nd time she has done this so she is on a raisin ban now!

Looks like i'll be joining this thread now, dd(21 months) has been in pants now since yesterday. She did all her wees on the toilet/potty yesterday but did both poos in her pants. She has been dry all morning

99redballoons · 20/05/2005 15:06

and
sorry to hear they are both poorly, but well done dd! Ds saved his poo's for his nap pull-ups or morning nappy. After a week or so of this I just knew he had to go one lunch time and we sat on the potty and read books for about 45mins... and low and behold a poo eventually came out! I was soooo happy, and we rang dh, and he got a new motorcylce dinky as a pressie (he didn't know he would get one of these so was well chuffed (my mum said don't tell him he's going to get something for doing it and it worked!)). The next lunchtime we did the same and it took about 20mins of reading. He got two stickers this time and rang dh again. From then on he was fine. HTH

How are you both, surfermum & flamesparrow?

coldtea · 20/05/2005 17:14

99-i feel really silly now, i've just started reading down this thread & have seen your post about the op. I saw your name on the active conversations & jumped hastily on this thread!

Dd has been dry all day & it's nearly bath time! Fingers crossed she'll make it through!

flamesparrow · 20/05/2005 19:09

We're leaving potty training for a few days while she gets used to her arm being in plaster (and antibiotic poo ).

You're all doing so well!!!

99redballoons · 22/05/2005 15:31

Hi girls, ds has got ANOTHER willy problem poor love. No spots this time, but very swollen tip and cracking. Got it checked by gp on Thurs who said it was a fungal infection and apply cream x. It just got worse and worse and ended up in A&E who sent us over to the paed ward and got a second opinion. Thankfully she didn't think it needed more oral antibiotics, but they've taken a swab and I now have to 'catch' a wee sample. DS is fine in himself though which is a good sign. Just looks like he's got a red balloon down there Still doing well on pot and is now telling me he needs to do a wee when fully clothed! I still have to remind him most of the time, but he seems to have come round a corner.

Hope you are all ok. Haven't heard from surfermum since Tues....

Surfermum · 22/05/2005 20:49

Hi all. Had a busy week with dd and my Dad's birthdays. We had a party for all her toddler group friends on her birthday, then this weekend had a barbecue for family and friends and today lunch out for my Dad's 80th. Got totally wrecked last night and this morning realised I had drunk almost the entire contents of a 3l box of wine .

Your poor little ones, you're all having a bit of a time of it aren't you? I don't blame you Flamesparrow for postponing.

Well I think surferbaby's cracked it. She's dry in the day now and no accidents for nearly a week I think , apart from little dribbles in her knickers. Seems to be able to tell me when she needs to go whatever the situation now, and now gets annoyed with me if I try to make her go when she doesn't want to, so I'm just leaving it up to her and taking changes of clothes out with me! I've even noticed a difference with her nappies in the morning - they're practically dry.

I'm very proud of her, but strangely feel a little sad as she really isn't my baby anymore.

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 23/05/2005 08:34

Hooray for surferbaby!!!! I think Flamechick will be fairly quick once we're over all this with her arm - she's still wanting to train now!

coldtea · 23/05/2005 12:12

99redballoons, your poor ds! How is he now?

Sounds like he's cracked the potty if he's telling you when he is fully clothed.

Dd is still not well she is asleep(in pants) in her ready bed as i type. I'm taking her to the doctors later today.

She has had 1 accident/day since thursday but that's with me asking her to sit on the potty. I think she has told me twice! When i went through this with ds i remember he was dry 10 days after we started but what i can't remember is how long it took for him to tell me when he needed to go-any ideas anyone??

coldtea · 23/05/2005 12:12

Well done surferbaby
