Dying terry and muslin nappies

So, I've washed the old terries and muslins a few times, and some are still a bit stained, but not worn out by any stretch. So I was wondering about dying them all different colours.

Has anybody done this? What is your favourite dye? It would obviously need to be something very permanent, preferably non-toxic (!) and that wasn't affected by contact with urine and faeces. Has anybody tried doing this with those machine dyes, and if so, do you have to be careful about what you put in the machine afterwards?

Am going to post this in the craft topic as well. Grateful for any replies on either thread. Thanks!

I've dyed them, but not for use as nappies. I turned them into beach cover-up hoodies

I used dylon. They took the dye well and were pretty colurfast and resistant to fading. Obviously not tested with urine/faeces though...

I never believe the machine will be OK and wash my spare white terry nappy after each dye job I do. But it's never come out less than white, so I guess it can be trusted after all.

I've dyed nappies with the dylon machine dye. Haven't had any problems with it affecting ds2's skin. Also so far it hasn't faded or been affected by sanitising powders.

I didn't have any problems with what I put in the machine after either, although I always make sure the first wash after is a dark one. I haven't found the need to wsh the dyed napppies seperatly either as the colours don't seem to run.

I have used green and blue.

Thanks ladies! I bought four different colours of machine dye (blue, green, yellow and orange) today for my 39 nappies (mostly inherited from relatives and friends) and am really looking forward to revamping them.
