We have read DS stories from a very young age and used to read him guess how much I love you every night as part of his bedtime routine.

We were recently at the stage where he used to recite the whole book by heart as we tuerned the pages so I thought we would intorduce new bedtime books. (He used to get loadsa different ones during the day but the same one each night).

Thing is, he just doesn't want to be read to anymore, during the day or at bedtime - he wants to turn the pages himself, look at the book himself (in such a way that I can't read the words at the same time iykwim).

This isn't really a problem as such and is actually very cute but was just wondering if anybody knows of anyway we can get around it? Simply because tonight he sat for ages turning and turning the same pages and it became more of boisterous game than the quiet wind down it is meant to be and he went off it when I had to eventally take it away from him!

DS1 went off being read stories for a while, we made up stories instead, which meant he still got a bedtime snuggle and story, hes now back into books and often mixes ' mummy stories' with real ones

I would let him look at the books in his way. its a stage and he will grow out of it and want to be read to at night again/eventually.I have found that its still important to let them play with the books and let them look at the pictures themselves.
For a while we sang at night as part of our routine, and we did this with nursery rhyme books so my DDs knew the order of the songs from the book.It helped and the singing was really good fun.
We also mix real stories with made up ones too.

My dd 2.6 does this sometimes and has for a while, she kind of sings and chunters to herself as she's looking at the pictures, she always likes to make sure I've got a book to read too!

Think it's just a phase, he's probably still getting alot out of the books just in a less wind down way!
