My dd is 5, so a bit younger, but sounds a bit like this. She "bounds" up to slightly older children and makes various demands for them to play (a bit like an enthusiastic labrador) she means well but sometimes they find it overwhelming/irritating.

It's not so bad with children that are used to her, e.g. at school as she is a bit less excitable and they accept her.

When you say "loud" do you mean in conversation with the other children or just generally shouting with excitement etc?

both! he's bossy and i can see the other children avoiding him, he's ok at school too, it's with strangers.

I tend to think (hope) that as they get a bit older they become a bit more socially aware and the over loudness gradually becomes less of an issue. People often comment about her being "confident" and a "chatterbox" and she is quite a character.

I do tend to intervene a bit at the park ( in a fairly low key way I think) but as your ds is a bit older that might not be so appropriate.

She is always the one squealing/squawking at parties. Sometimes it is very hard to get her attention and try and quietly encourage her to calm down just a touch.

Maybe you could practise with him? Suggest a pretend game about going to the park and you be another child he doesn't know?

southeastastra · 06/04/2009 13:28

i've done that edam, he's angelic.

it's real children he seems to have trouble with

Sorry, haven't got any bright ideas, then.

YOu've ahd his ears checked right? DS2 grew out of it to some extent when his glue ear cleared

southeastastra · 06/04/2009 19:16

he had his ears checked when he was nearly 4, may be worth getting done again. he really is so loud.
