3yr old smearing poo over himself at night!?

Help my 3yr old son has taken to smearing himself with his poo after he's gone to bed wearing a nappy. This has only recently started and seems to coincide with him moving up to the 'big room' at his nursery on his 3rd birthday. He is potty trained during the day and has been for 8months or so but still wears a nappy at night - we actually haven't tried him at night without a nappy - could this be the next step? Any other tips out there to discourage poo smearing??

When you reacted to his "pooh painting" what did he say??

tbh, if my 3 yr old did this they would be in trouble, if they did it again they would be on the step, but I would want an explanation from them as to why they had done it in the 1st place.

It could be attention seeking or it could be a suggestion from another child in the new room, or he may have seen another child do it??

Personally I would night time potty train him at this point.

Good luck!!

wouldnt try and night time train him, unless the nappy is regularly dry. He might not be ready.

As regards the poop. I would explain that he is a big boy and must try for a poo before bed and if he feels he needs to go in the night then to get you or go himself if able.

In order to stop the poop smear. Get some large bodysuit vests and maybe some very large sleepsuits cut the feet out. This will discourage him and prevent him from getting in. If he then does poo he will after shout you to clean him, but at least only a nappy.

Find out if there are any issues with other children at nursery or indeed a change in staff.
