Opinions please on this - My Hubby has a BIG birthday coming up next yr...I want him to go to Australia to see his brother BUT...

We all cant afford to go but I think it would be amazing for him, and most probably the last time he would see him.

He would have to go for 3 weeks minimum - he says no as he wouldnt want to be away from me and our 4 yr old ds.

What do you think?

Why would he have to go for that long? I know plenty of people who have done Australia for a week or two (plus flights) and really enjoyed it. In fact the people who went for a week thought it worked well as they didn't really suffer any jetlag.

Anyway, if he says no, then he doesn't have to as it is his birthday. Could you arrange for them to meet up halfway instead? There are some amasing places around - Brunei is pretty impressive, Singapore can be an experience or somewhere a bit further this way?

Under those circs I would encourage him to go. 3 weeks, or even 4, will fly by. If his brother and you have a webcam, you can have loads of calls on skype and he'll be able to see your DS and vice versa.

Alternatively, if you booked it far enough ahead, could you all go? Assuming you'll have lowish costs once you get there re accommodation with family.

Get the brother to come to him adn have some sort of surprise birthday party? I think it is nice that he doesn't want to be away form you and his son on his birthday.

I would say an absolute min of 2. I've done a whistle stop tour to see family and went to Dubai 4 days, Oz 5 days and NZ a week. We were shattered, and really didn't get any quality time with anyone.

If you start saving now couldn't you all go? If he doesn't want to go without you and ds then why not save until you can all go, not necessarily for his birthday but as soon after as you can afford. Would be a great experience for your ds too and would be nice for him to see his Uncle.
