Leaking with Bumgenius?

I am trying out a Bumgenius nappy with my ds, nearly 5 months, before I invest. He's a chunky little fella (short and round), and quite a heavy wetter. I'm finding that within the first half an hour he's leaked quite badly around the waistband. This has happened nearly every time I've tried it.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong (very possible as I'm not totally sure how to use it), or if they're just not the right nappies for us.

I've got a council voucher to spend and need to use it before it expires so if anyone can recommend a different nappy that might be better for us, I'd love to to hear about it. Ideally I'd like a BTP nappy that will eventually be nursery-friendly too.

Oh and it's a version 3.

Have you pre-washed and not used fabric conditioner? Also, ensure that his willy is pointing downwards.

Are you using it on the smallest size? I found this happened with my DS (probs around 4-5mo) until I moved the poppers up a size and there have been no leaks since then. He is now 11mo and tall, but still on second set of poppers so I think they might do for BTP for us (fingers crossed!).

Also as mumoftoby says, don't use fabric conditioner, and I also found they took quite a few washes to reach full absorbency.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I've pre-washed and definitely haven't used fabric conditioner. I'm using it on the middle size, as this seems to be the best fit. I'll experiment though.

It's odd, always leaking round the waistband before the nappy is really wet so I wondered if I was putting the insets in incorrectly.

At the moment good old-fashioned terries seem to be more effective.

I'm sure you are doing this already but do check that the top of the nappy is properly arranged. The only time I have had back leaks with BGs is when the inner bit was poking up a bit and not fully tucked in.

Thanks Noolia. I'll try it again and double check. The frustrating thing is that I've only got one, so each time it leaks I have to wash it and dry it before trying it again!
