Very bad nappy rash with reusables - suggestions?

Our 11-day old DD has had very bad nappy rash the last 2 days with both Totsbots and FuzziBunz, it seems that if she wees even slightly it angers her bum so much . She is our first so we aren't sure what the best creams are to use and don't want to try a million (or buy a million!) before something works so I wondered if anyone had any tips?

Really don't want to use disposables but wonder if they'll make her more comfortable?

hi - yes i do mean cups and tablespoons. funny, i never noticed that the UK does it in mls and grams as i'm used to both but i'm not sure what it would be to convert oil into mls. is everyone able to do it in cups and tablespoons? i know i use google a lot to sometimes look up conversions with recipes to convert from one to another as a certain amount of flour in grams will be different in cup size than the same amount of oil in grams to cup size. confused? hope not!

primigravida i'm in little old dunedin. i'm from here but was living in the UK. are you a kiwi too?

I make up a wash solution using 2 camomile & honey tea bags steeped in a pint of hot water until it goes cold. I add in 1 tbsp olive oil, a couple of drops of lavender oil an 1 tsp of very mild baby shampoo and shake to mix. I keep it in one of those large pampers wipes boxes and have got an assortment flannels / fleece wipes that I soak in the liquid and then put through the wash with the nappies. I replace the liquid every other day if I haven't already used it all.

I also second giving the nappies an extra rinse, but don't forget about air time for the affected area. I would put my little boy in the middle of a pile of towels which would hopefully catch any leaks. Didn't catch the one when he pee'd in his mouth tho'

lulururu - yeah I'm a kiwi too, I used to live in England and has ds there and that's how I got hooked on mumsnet. The NZ sites aren't as good.

lulururu - thanks for that!! What size a cup do you use?? I'm in UK but could do the cup thing I'm sure - how many mls do you think it holds??
Also how much aqueous cream would you add to the recipe you gave us?

lulururu · 17/02/2009 05:16

ummm... i'll have a look at my mls measurement on my measuring cups. i had no idea that that was an american way of measuring. that will SOOO be why i couldn't find measuring cups in the £1 stores!! will look and get back to you divedaisy

about the aqueous cream i get a 500ml tub of it and prob add about 1/4 of it to about half of the wax mixture - so half is baby bum wax and half body cream for me. then just beat it with an egg beater.

a tip - once you've done this there will be a lot of wax on bowls and stuff obviously. boil the jug and douse everything which will melt it all straight away. this is such a good natural alternative to other nappy creams i should really post this in ethical living!

lulururu · 17/02/2009 22:25

right... so 1cup (american measurement) = 250mls. 1/3cup = 80mls. but this recipe need not be too precise. it will only mean you might get a slightly harder waxier wax or a softer one, experiment with how you like it. for those of you wondering about cup SIZE, a teacup is about the same size as a standard american full measuring cup. this whole cup thing has wisened me up no end! let me know how you go.
