Babyproofing Question

When the summer comes and I decide it's warm enough to leave the patio doors open how can I babyproof (or toddler probably) a double door?

DD will be 1 and 1/2 in June when I'm expecting the weather to be warm and probably walking and running by then.

I wasn't going to bother but there is a step to get into the front room through the patio doors and if she trips either way it'll be a hard surface to fall onto.
Also I dont want her to go out when I'm not in the room (popped to the loo or something) but I dont want to shut door just to go to the loo.

Am I being a little PFB or is there a way I can do this? All the baby gates I see won't be big enough.

Thats ok. In my experience though they always find some way of getting round any childproofing! Good luck better safe than sorry.
