Which nappies do you use/ are the best for newborns?

Started a post about this in pregnancy but suspect you will know more in here!

I was wondering which type of nappies (disposable) are best for a newborn? I only have experience of pampers new baby ones from work (and have found no problems) but went to buy some in preperation and they're SO expensive!

Do you really need the more expensive brands at first when they can't crawl and aren't so active? Would we get away with the supermarket own brand nappies, or a cheaper verson of the pampers/ huggies etc brand at first or are they quite uncomfortable and leaky?

And also, on a completely unrelated point... we have just bought a second hand bugaboo with carrycot- very silly question, but do we need to put a cover over the matress before we use it? Like you would on a moses basket I mean?

Thanks everyone!

I used a mix of pampers and huggies and Boots nappies when my lo's were small. I have also used tesco's own make nappies for ds - they all did ok.

I have always used Pampers.

I didn't cover the mattress on my Bug; the black cover is removable and washable.

Ah great thank you!

I've only ever used pampers at work too, but never realised how expensive they were in comparison! I think I might try a supermarket brand to start, buying a small pack, and assess how we get on

boots own were great for all my 4 dc dont by to many packs as they go into he next size really quickly

We started with a pack of Huggies, mainly to get the freebie pack from Boots. Changed to Tesco own brand for the next packet and had no problem with them. Have only just changed back to Huggies as DD is now in the Little Walkers one and tesco didn't fit her so well.

Try diff brands, go for whatever's on special or you have vouchers for (which reminds me Pampers Baby club sends vouchers periodically, maybe worth joining?). I echo missymoo, don't buy many packets at once, babies grow far quicker than you expect them too

Apparently Tescos nappies and Pampers are made by the same company. I've always found them fine when we have used them (use cloth mainly)

i've used boots and pampers nappies - both are fine i didnt really notice a difference in quality

I got a voucher from one of the baby magazines for a free pack of nappies from Lidl. My mum got them for me and they were really good quality - and cheaper than other brands. We used Boots nappies and they leaked but can't remember much difference between the others.
