PhD board - help/advice

Hi

I?m looking for a bit of advice.

I have my first board on Wednesday.

I?m basically in the processes of finishing my PhD. I got an AHRC grant but when it finished, I needed to work, so I went part-time. This has meant that even though, as far as the AHRC are concerned, I?m in my completion year (and only have three months left) my Uni see me as just about to start my completion year.

They have never bothered with a board before. I live three hours from uni (I?ve never even been there!) and I think they just let me get on with it. My supervisor is happy with my progress. He?s never bothered me very much. I just submit chapters which he seems happy with.

It?s been arranged in London which is an hour and a half a way. I will basically drop kids off, travel to London, have meeting and travel straight back.

It?s a really bad time for me to have a board as I?m on my own with my two kids (5 and 3) most of the time as DH works miles away. Also, I?ve just had to move my brother, who has cerebral palsy, to live near by. I just feel like I?m going to be exposed as not up to it!!

What is your experience of a board?

sorry no experience apart from proposal presentation, but wanted to wish you good luck

You've got this far so i see no reason to panic. We don't do this in my dept though so I can't advise - just wanted to wish you well.

Thanks. I've now got an ill three year old on my hands so this all might be a moot point!! Their timing is great isn't it?!
