Depemds. My 2.6 DD still has a nap about 5 days out of 7.

She doesn't sleep in her bed anymoer though. She just sleeps on teh setee.

I know of children that gave up their nap about 2 years...others were 3+

Mine climbs into his cot and goes to sleep sometimes (he's 22 months) but any attempts to make him nap are met with derision.

If we go out in the car in the late afternoon, he sleeps despite himself!

If he wakes up crying in the night, I would go and comfort him, but tell him it's still time to sleep and leave him in the cot. I think it will take a while of comforting and settling him before he gets used to it. Does he have a favourite toy that settles him?

DS napped almost every day until he started full time school.

They stop when they are ready, I think. DS is 2.3 and really miserable if he doesn't get a nap. Some days all we manage is some quiet, cuddly time on the sofa, other days he needs a 2 hour nap.

Have you thought about putting him into a toddler bed/ single bed and making a big deal of him being a big boy who sleeps in his own bed?

ds 2.7 needs a nap or he becomes very..........cheeky shall I say!

My dd2 refused naps from about 18months and would get massively over excited at that age. I started putting a DVD on and we curled up together and she normally fell asleep(I quite often did as well!). We still do this and she started pre-school last week.

mum4ever · 23/01/2009 22:16

My dd2 (2.7) gave up her nap when she was 2 and goes the full night from about 8pm to 7am. She was grumpy when she first gave it up but it has sorted itself out now.

If you want him in his own bed foxy you will have to be determined and keep putting him back - be prepared for a few broken nights sleep. It may take some time to break a habit though so maybe start one weekend?

If he won't nap there is no point fighting as you will end up wound up just let him have some quiet time to rest and a book or DVD/TV.

Good luck

Ds is 2.4, he pretty much gave up his nap over christmas. I can sometimes convince him to have an hour in the pram but he generally doesn't need it any more I have a 10 month old anti napper as well so Im shattered!!

devilisunaccomplishedinprada · 23/01/2009 22:51

My dd2 still has a nap most days. She's 2.4. I don't put her down for a nap though, if we're out in the car she just falls asleep, and if we're in the house she either just falls asleep on the sofa herself or comes up to me for a snuggle as says, "Mummy I'm tired". And falls asleep on my knee. If it's after 3.30pm I try to keep her awake though. She still wakes in the night (for a bottle ) but I get into her bed till she goes back asleep rather than her getting in ours.

My dd1 was still napping when she was 4 and only grew out of it just before she started school.

My 2.8 has a nap most days and sleeps usually 8.15pm-5.30pm. We're trying to dump the nap to get him to sleep a little later but he's not really ready for it. We did have a phase just before Christmas of getting him to sleep until nearly 6 each morning but he's started waking earlier again. The upside is that now he does chat for about half an hour in bed before getting up.

We find we can easily get him through the day without a nap if we don't go out in the car for more than twenty minutes after eleven am . In the car after three? Stuffed .

He stopped napping in his cot as soon as he could get out of it. Since then he has napped in his pushchair or in the car. I quite like the pushchair sleep apart from when it is pissing down as you get a good work out to get up to the required speed for sleeping.

He will sometimes just fall asleep on somebody on the sofa, but not me or DH, obviously. That would be too nice. And we give him lots and lots of exercise to wear him out!

This early rising stage has gone on for too long (DS1, 5, was similar) and we are shagged. Just another two years to go zzzzz.

DD (now 2.3) dropped naps at 2, which is when we moved her into a bed. Similar to others she may nap in the car if we go out in the afternoon. However the last 2 days she's fallen asleep in her armchair and on me while we've watched a DVD together in the afternoon. The down side is she hasn't fallen asleep until gone 9pm either evening. Usually she sleeps 7pm - 8am
