Nappy changing bags

DW rather likes this OiOi , or possibly this

Now, I can handle those designs as changing mats , they're kinda funky, but the bags aren't exactly neutral or manly, are they, and I guess I'm in for my fair share of the brown stuff... Soooo... may I ask the laydees here:

  1. Are nappy bags a stupid waste of money - just use a regular bag and throw everything in...

  2. The best thing since sliced bread... love the Petunia Picklebottom in red brocade

etc.

Could you recommend anything that didn't make dh puke, that perhaps you both could wear - maybe one that was v. well designed and clever (I like things that are well-designed and clever) ?

PS - If you'd like to see me with one of those nice floral prints, please be advised that I doubt my metrosexuality is up to it.

PS Hud2dee you should start a thread about contents of changing bags so you know what you'll have to accomodate. My pretty small next one currently holds juice cup, biscuit box, 4 vehicles, 3 stories, my purse, my mobile, paper and pens, 3 boxes of raisins, a nappy and wipes. THere is a lovley phase when they're big babies and all you need is a nappy and wipes! At the beginning you need about 6 nappies and a change of clothes for the poo that escapes up the back!

Your wife may need different sized bags for the different phases...

Misdee - I think kandoo have flushable wipes. You can get them in bigger supermarkets. They're marketed for potty training.

misdee · 06/04/2005 18:38

of course tassis, i always forget about kandoo!!

Thanks for that alux - that makes sense! Would fleece liners work in muslin nappies for newborns do you think?

Thanks to all the recent posters with snippets of advice.

Jaw dropped at your nappy bag tassis... I was kind of thinking as far as nappy plus wipe... clothes plus raisins plus distraction will all have to wait to my brain has expanded !!!

I finally understood liners the other day when I saw my friend change a nappy. I think the problem is that the industry interchange liner (ie. thin piece of fleece or treated paper that attempts to capture the brown stuff for easy disposal and offers stain protection for the nappy) and 'booster' / 'absorbant liner' which (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) is a fabric insert (typically cottom / terry / hemp) which you put into the nappy to allow it to soak up extra urine during extended periods - ie. nights)...

To all first-time mums and dads: My friend used a flushable liner and when the nappy came off, the enormous quantity of poo was nearly all captured in this blessed piece of paper which looked miraculously clean and dry underneath... liner then carefully chucked down the bog... Nappy was stained, but only a tiny bit.... sorry if TMI at dinner time !

So, Reusable fleece liner babes: Can you clarify why and how you do it ? Save money / less rubbish for sewer system to deal with / more eco ? Do you hold in flush stream or leave in bog for 1/2 hour...

All sounds scarily gross for this big hairy trucker...

cp: check with someone who really knows but I think the idea for newborns is that 'BF explosive poo' is trapped directly by the muslin... WITHOUT using any kind of liner...

PLEASE correct quickly, experienced ones, if I'm talking, ahem, crap...

tbh if newborn is breastfed then the poo is pretty inoffensive (its like thick orange paste which washes off easily). i dont bother with lining dd3 nappies as it just isnt worth it. i'm not worried by staining as its rarely a problem. I use fleece liners with dd2 as she has tummy problems and does sloppy poos, and the paper ones just didnt catch it all as they sort of scrunched up in the nappy. also like the fact they can be shaped and cut to the size of the nappy so the whole area is covered rather than a strip as is what happens with the paper liners (please bear in mind that dd2 is a large toddler and we were using size 3 tots bots before she was 1yr old).

And i've perfected a new way of booster dd2 nappies at night, a size 2 totsbots fits in a size 3 tots very well and can still do up the wrap over the top

misdee is a nappy pro.

Love the totsbots 2 in 3 idea.

Does fleece work well as wipes for pooey bums?

Good grief Tassis - you have to take 6 nappies out with you? Will a newborn get through that many? It's a good job you said that - I imagine it's a nightmare getting caught short.

Great idea misdee about cutting your fleece liners to cover the whole nappy. I will make my own too.
