11 month old making himself vomit -- any advice?

Hi

My DS is 11 months old. He is generally happy and well-adjusted but over the last month has started the disturbing practise of making himself sick.

He sucks his fingers when he is tired or upset and I think that he maybe accidentally pushed them in too far and gagged the first time but now he has started doing it deliberately. Sometimes it seems like he is doing it when people are not paying him attention but other times it's random. DH was holding him in Next the other day and he pushed them so far down, he actually vomited all over DH - was very embarassing as could see other people giving me horrified looks He also sometimes does it with the spoon when he's eating.

Initially DH and I said NO very sternly but then wondered if it was drawing more attention to it so have now been trying just saying no gently, pulling his fingers away and then distracting him with something else.

Would appreciate any advice and knowing whether anyone else has epxerienced this as am finding it very upsetting.

DS went through a phase of doing this about a month ago (he's 13 mo). We ignored it, he stopped.

I know this doesn't work for everyone, but as soon as he stopped getting attention, eh stopped doing it.
