7 year old with persistent soiling

Hi, not sure if this is the right topic area to be posting this in - please tell me if not! I'm looking for ideas and advice about what to do with a 6 year old boy who persistently soils - about 3 or 4 times a week. He had some bowel problems as a baby, and sometimes smears his poo as well. He's not my son but a friend's. They're really wanting to do something about it now, but don't really know where to start. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry I wrote '7 year old' in the subject, and '6 year old' in the text - he's definitely 6!!!

It could be constipation. First port of call would be GP.

What happens is that they get so constipated that the bowel sort of overflows and leaks.

Ask for an assessment with a clinical psychologist and an encopresis clinic. A psychologist that uses an 'externalising' approach to treatment would be helpful.
